The Official "Show Your Basses" Thread Part 10

Hello everyone.
Here's a photograph of my favorite bass.
benson.jpg

This was my first bass. I got it cheap from ebay, as part of a package deal. It came with a bag, a small amp, a change of strings and a pick.
Although I've mistreated it, it still works properly and doesn't look too bad... no big scratches or nicks.

Diggin' the Carol Kaye mute!

hands up who thinks Bassagents Jazz bass looks ultra tasty! :bassist: what is the finish on the fingerboard?

Thanks dude :) It's a MIM, but barely original. The pickups are Fender Custom Shop 60's (best pickups for fretless IMO), the bridge is a Gotoh 201 and the finish on the fingerboard is epoxy. I didn't do it myself but had a great Dutch luthier do it for me :)

I love those Gibson Rippers! I've been looking for one forever! How would you describe the sound?

I can get everything from fat dub to Jaco growl from the fretless. The fretted basses are great too: my '75 is strung w/ heavy gauge flatwounds and it blends really well yet maintains presence. Every note is audible.

A lot of people complain about the Varitone and that only 1 or 2 of the settings are useful. IMO, it's not that the sounds are not useful, it's just that some of the positions are lossy. This can be compensated for with a decent preamp or by making a gain adjustment. Not the best design, but possible to work with if you try.

Waiting on this bad boy, a custom Kinal SK5-B:
