Picked up this 2022 MIM P bass yesterday for $550 in mint condition. Seriously, like it was just unboxed.
Took it to practice today to surprise the guys. It has stock Fender flats on it. The tone was actually better than I expected. But, I did notice a lack of power. Had to turn it up more than my other P bass. I think I’m going to be replacing the pickup with a Seymour Duncan SPB-2. I have the SPB-1 on my other p with LaBella DTF. I don’t want to voice this the same (what’s the point). I will probably changed flats as well. TI Jazz flats are nice, I had them on a Gretsch hollow body bass and it was blissful. I’d consider another flat but not sure. If there is anyone with a P with SPB2’s on it, what strings do you use?

Use some Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats. They sound as close to roundwound as flats can get. Then you will have the best of both worlds.

I went and installed the Aguilar AG4J-70 pickups. It was between these and the Fender Pure Vintage '74. Bothe are supposedly reversed engineered from 70's pickups. I was not able to properly compare them but decided on the Aggies. No complaints so far. I also installed a 920D prewired control plate with the orange drop capacitor. It's as close as I'm going to get it to its original form, I guess.

Have you heard/tried the Tom Brantley Geddy Lee pickups? I believe they're made to be as close to Geddy's original 70's jazz pickups. Could be an option if you end up wanting to move on from the Aguilars. I've only heard youtube clips but they sound great in those examples.

I decided to supercharge my Schector Stiletto Studio-4. I added a push pull pot on the volume control as an active/passive switch and a passive tone pot with a 0.047 orange cap. The EMGs have always been a little too aggressive for me. And I wanted a back up if the battery ever started dying mid-gig. It has actually opened up a whole other world of sounds for this bass. I definitely filled up the cavity, but I was very pleased with the result. Now she is one of a kind.

Loving that color! I've had my Studio 5 for a week now and it's my best sounding bass. Those Stilletos are amazing axes!

Ok, so this is my first post and my first bass -- Ibanez SR405 (2001). I've played keyboards 13 years and guitar for 25 years (until getting Focal Dystonia). Anyways, I've started getting control of the FD and have found I can facilitate enough motor skills again that bass is playable (although "slapping" is kind of a challenge).

Those basses were really well made even though they weren't the top of the product line. Ibanez SR 5 strings have narrow (16.5mm) string spacing so slap playing takes a little more accuracy than a 4 string. It's still totally doable, I'd recommend slowing down and not striking too hard :thumbsup:
