However, I gotta admit that a newer, molded plastic case with ample interior space is a bit more practical. Ditto a well made gig bag.

I have a '64 Thunderbird II with OHSC. The case is in storage for providence-sake but I never use it because it's not as protective as my contemporary brown Gibson HSC w/form-fitted fuchsia interior. Modern cases are much better/more functional, and for gigs I only use a gig-bag.
remember when buying a BASS meant the case (not a bag) was included ( no charge)
And it was a really nice case !!!!
I've been noticing that a few Companies are starting to do the case included again.
For the price of good Bass today , They should include a SECURITY GUARD : )
True and I have zero problem w/ it at this stage of my life:

Yeah, that was a pet peeve of mine for years. Every Fender I bought didn't come with a case, except for the American standard ones. They came with a cheap gig bag, and that includes my American Performer. Other brands would come with cases, at least back in the 80's and 90's. The cases that came with my Ibanez basses in the 90's were awesome.
I echo this sentiment. For years I hefted a Forge case for the Modulus because I traveled and wanted the extra layer of protection. Sometime later I ordered a Ken Smith which came with a teardrop ohsc case. I acquired an 88 key molded SKB case which I outfitted with an plush interior. These days everything goes into a strong gig bag. The oldies are in their original hard shell cases. But in closets.
I think I need a bigger box.

I got my first 5 string in the early 80s it included an awesome case .
But in 1978 I ordered an
ELECTRA MPC oUtLaW (case included)
Black real leather , lined with a really dark purple velvet , the best looking case inside and out I've ever had.
4 yrs later , it was FN stolen
My 1979 KRAMER XL-8 (beautiful case included)
was also stolen
I still think about and miss those 2 basses .
****ing theives !!!!
I spent the next two or three years calling every pawn shop and music store. trying to find them.
I Never heard anything or saw my 2 stolen basses again.
I'm gonna go and cry now. : ? ) lol

Surprised at Fender's not selling with an ohsc.
Mine are vintage so all came with one period correct. My cheapest, a SBMM Ray 5ca came w gig bag. Maybe it's about the selling price under 1k.
Either way, protect your investment.

What is the reason for any more than a string-stop?
I know man , They were valuable in 1978 & 79 respectively
Ive had and have some Great basses ,
But
Those 2 basses were a step above
That's why I bought em. but !!!
That's why they both got stolen too
JIO, it’s for you to be able to use any kind of strings you like, double ball or single ball. I really like this bass, the tones are amazing and it never gets out of tune.
