I got a new Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens. So far I have resisted posting pics of my kids but it's 95% of what I shoot these days so without further ado here is my youngest through my new Nikon 35mm f/1.8:

Yep. AB800, AB1600, and a ringflash. Crapload of modifiers, too, including the biggest softbox I've seen

I'd love to hear some feedback after you've used them for a while. I'm considering the 2-AB800 kit at some point (probably 6 months at the earliest). Are you triggering them with flash, sync chords or radio transmitter? And do you have a flash meter? If not, how are you metering your set up?

I did pick up a Rogue Flash diffuser today to soften up my flash set up for the NAMM show.

Will do - I'll be using them a lot, so I expect to have some feedback soon.

Test shots were done with the cable to the camera (I have radio triggers, but the wrong cables to trigger the strobes)

No flash meter yet, just using the histogram and the "chimp and change" method for now. A seconic will be ordered soon...

That was done with a flash head (in this case a studio strobe - but you could do it with a flash) in a strip box (a softbox with a rectangular shape. On the front of the stripbox is a grid (which is used to control the direction of the light coming out of the box). That light is placed high and slightly in front of the subject. 1/250th of a second. Click and done.

The cool thing is this pic was taken in a fully light room against a white wall.

Ok so from one extreme to the other. Bassybill already noted the lipstick is LOUD, but we were going for that loud, pin-up look.

I think the lipstick is fine However I feel her face looks a bit flat due to no strong shadows to show depth and contour. Good job nontheless! She's super cute.

That's what ringflash does - that's the whole point. I can see using this unit in other ways NOT as a ring, but this was the first run.

Brad, that's strictly the ring. I had another strobe behind her to blow the wall completely 256 white, but I was getting some flare back into the lens, and really didn't like the look.

oh, and her status yesterday on fb was the following:

dad: "i got a new blah blah blah!"
me: "what's that?"
dad: "it'll do blah blah blah for pictures..."
me: (inside my head) YES NEW PROFILE PICTURE!!!

made me laugh.

Are cheap flashguns worth even looking at?

Was looking at the cheap wireless units and really cheap flashguns on ebay, but did a bit of reading and found out that flashguns can damage your other gear, didn't know that!

Or would I best to just bite the bullet and get a 430 EX II (could wirelessly control from my camera). Dare say if I get one used I can try it, and if I find I'm not needing it, just resell it.

Opinions (hopefully without derailing the pictures!)

I know this is a photography thread but I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on bags, specifically backpacks. I'm not a fan of shoulders bags and I'd love a backpack that could hold camera gear.

I picked up the Canon Back pack on Amazon for $42 working for me.

I can't speak about cheap flash units other than what I can tell you is possible. For getting your flash off camera, using radio triggers and controlling them manually, high quality is certainly possible. That being said, I have 3 430's and 2 580's.
