Brand new to this just got my first DSLR - these are some of my first shots ever - I have not done any post processing so I think I can improve them further. I really like the trees in the first one.

I'm loving it (especially with this new lens) but if I were to do t again in the same price range I'd prolly go with the D3100. Newer sensor with better high-ISO performance. Actually if I were to do it again I'd try to talk myself and my wife into a D7000.

I never get tired of the photos you guys post! Both are beautiful, both the girls and the photos themselves.

made me laugh.

LOL! That sounds like basically all my friends the minute I decided to buy a DSLR .

Update: I actually returned the D7000 and got a 7D and so far, I like it a lot. Nothing against the D7000 at all but I like the way the 7D feels and the button layout is more to my liking. I figure I can always switch back if my opinion changes . My Grandma's 90th birthday celebration was today and I really got to put it to work; Hundreds of pics in relatively low-light. On the viewfinder they look quite nice but we'll see when I get them on my computer. I'll post a couple of the nice ones when I do.

Are cheap flashguns worth even looking at?

Was looking at the cheap wireless units and really cheap flashguns on ebay, but did a bit of reading and found out that flashguns can damage your other gear, didn't know that!

Or would I best to just bite the bullet and get a 430 EX II (could wirelessly control from my camera). Dare say if I get one used I can try it, and if I find I'm not needing it, just resell it.

Opinions (hopefully without derailing the pictures!)

cheap flashguns are fine if you are ok with using them in manual mode, but don't waste money on cheap triggers - get pocketwizards if you can afford them, and if not, keep saving. cheap triggers are just endlessly frustrating.

there are a few flashes that can damage your gear, but if you do your homework you'll be safe.

Re: radio triggers

Tictacs has far more experience than myself I'm sure but I will say that the Photixx Stratos 4-in-1 (~$80) has been getting really good reviews for performance, reliability and build quality on various review sites and by some professional photographers on the Fred Miranda forums.

I'm leaning towards trying a set. I'm sure I would go with PWs if I were a pro and money was at stake. Tried and true. Either that or the Nikon SU-800. Maybe with radio poppers.

I bought some cheapo radio triggers (cactus, pt04, many names) from the evilbay, they seemed to get "ok" reviews if they don't work correctly I'm only 15 $ poorer, I figured I'd rather have those then nothing until I can fork for pocket-wizards or something.

they're good indoors, but go to hell in a handbasket outside due to the sun etc. the phottix mentioned aboved have been getting pretty good reviews, and for casual use i wouldn't stress too much about it.

Ditto my friend. I bought the cheapest one on eBay (which was $26 shipping included) and it works awesome for the closed quarters that I've been playing in.

So Ziltoid, we now have pretty much the exact same gear, let's see your stuff!
