The Orville

I bailed four minutes in. Then I watched the rest in 7-10 minute chunks throughout the evening. A majority of the episode was shameless star trek action rip off and the rest was terrible jokes. This went beyond homage. It was just almost plagiarism. He should be ashamed of himself. This show is garbage.

I like Family Guy although I am not sitting at the TV waiting for the next episode like I perhaps was back in 1999 when it first came out, never cared for American Dad or The Cleveland Show. The previews for this did not really do much for me however I guess I'll give it my own chance.

I didn't know who Seth Mc was before this and not inclined to seek out more of him.

The humour is pretty obvious but it sort of pans out if you ignore the parody/plagiarism. The broken ''Captain Kirk'' doesn't work for me.

The laser tag battling was the lowest point.

I thought it was pretty good overall. If anything, it was a little too subtle. The theme is something like Parks and Recreation meets Star Trek. The characters are typical anti-heroes. Ne'er do wells trying to rebuild what is left of their careers. They just happen to work for the Union, (their term for the Federation). I also thought the cast did a fine job with the premiere. I am looking forward to the next one.

I watched the first twenty minutes of episode two this morning. The blatant theft is ridiculous. His Kermit the frog doll and explaining to his alien crewman that Kermit was a great leader on Earth is directly ripped off from Babylon 5 and Garibaldi's Sylvester poster. The ship masquerading as a different ship is from Enterprise. The girl having super strength because she's from a planet with higher gravity is partially stolen from a DS9 episode but mingled with elements from similar plot lines in other episodes I can't recall right now. I turned it off right as he woke up in what was clearly a simulation designed to manipulate him in some way, stolen from Enterprise, Voyager and TNG.

Is it a comedy? A drama? Straight up sci fi? He thinks it can be all of that and it's not.

You forgot to mention that the simulation was "ripped off" from The Cage (ST:TOS pilot).

I like it, in part because there are so many allusions to other Star Treks.
