The Orville

Its tuff to find much of anything worth watching on network television these days, at least its not another cop or hospital show or some other copy cat drama. Yes its a take off on star trek I don't think theres any question about that but hey its something a little different and for that reason alone its worth checking in on, seriously, how many "brilliant" shows are on regular TV ?

Seems like it doesn't know what it wants to be. Certainly is not a parody, like Galaxy Quest. More like an homage, with some Seth McFarlane humor. It's not bad, but it's a LOT less than I hoped it would be.

It’s roughly what I expected. In fact I had very low expectations and it has cleared that low bar for me.

I've seen a lot worse crap, the last couple star trek series were just not that interesting so this breathes a little new blood into the genre. Don't like a little levity with your sci fi ? then its probably not for you

Episode 4 title: If The Stars Should Appear

Spot the notable appearance by an A-List star? I thought I was imagining it. Looked it up. Bam!

This show is... I don't know. Star Trek comfort food? Rocky road ice cream? A TNC burrito?

I laughed out loud several times.

I liked the first 2 episodes. I didn't care as much for the 3rd episode, because it was more serious and about ethics. I have not seen the 4th episode.

I found the first 2 episodes to be fun. This is not a show that anyone should take seriously. Especially the Zealot-Trekkies who love to bash it.

The ol' sinister computer behind the wall ploy, I think this was used multiple times in the original series

A wonderful example of this plot is from Futurama with the episode "Amazon Women in the Mood". One of the top 5 episodes of the series, it's packed full of great jokes.

Fans of the show (like me) know that they have a lot of respect for Star Trek and another one of the best episodes ("Where No Fan Has Gone Before"), a ST parody that features a re-creation of the original series, complete with the voices of Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Checkov, McCoy, and Uhura.

Yesterday I watched episodes 2,3 and4. Not bad. I was entertained for the duration of each episode and that's really all that matters. I have a very low tolerance for boredom with TV so if I can sit through an hour long show and be interested enough to wait through a bunch of long commercial breaks them that meets my personal standard for what's good and what isn't.

It's obvious that every single episode is going to be a "treatment" of a plot or story that's been done before, So if you consider this to be a "ripoff" and it's going to bother you, you might as well not watch anymore, because that's what the show is all about.

I think that's why I'm actually interested in Orville. One of the reasons I'm lukewarm on the whole Star Trek franchise is that every bit of action or dialogue seems like it was written by a committee.

Seth makes space for the characters to act like ordinary people who, in real life, jibber jabber about stupid stuff and make sarcastic comments under their breath. We get to see characters that are peripheral to the scene react and add perspective, even though it would never be included in a "seruous" show because it doesn't advance the narrative. i appreciate that.
