Holy cats! Them's some rare birds! Looks like the minty one has the Bart EZQ and TC buffer pre--how does that compare to a more modern active setup?

Thanks. The one on the right was a really cool baby blue color when I bought it new in 1986. It's yellowed a bit in 23 years, so starting to look like a mint green color. I didn't realize just how much it yellowed until I pulled off the truss cover today...

Anyone know if this was a stock color back in 1986? I bought it at a Sam Ash on Long Island back then for a killer deal because one of the employees who collects guitars had grabbed it when it came in...then he put it on the floor to sell months later when he needed some cash for a different guitar. It was unplayed but he couldn't sell it in the store as new.

It may have been a custom order or a NAMM Show one that Ash got back then because I recall getting in in early spring while there was still snow on the ground as we left on a tour.

That's a shame, color fading and all. You must be bummed! I'll help you out and buy that faded thing from you so you don't have to get all depressed and stuff looking at it all the time.

Actually, I loaned my baby blue Pedulla 8 (and others...you can see I was into headless basses) for the cover shot of one of the music equipment/retailer trade magazines in 1991 for its bass issue. So, it's been immortalized :o

(Center) 1986 Buzz. Bought this at 8th Street Music in Philly. My godfather died and left me some money, and I ordered a Buzz as a rememberance (plus I was lusting after one). The one I ordered was Arctic White (a very popular color at the time) and the guys there said they'd place the order, but they had a black one coming in and asked if I wanted them to call when it arrived. I did. They called. Rest is history. The funniest thing is that I swear I saw the bass I ordered for sale on eBay about 10 years ago. Serial # slightly after this one, my specs and it came with the huge flight-like case Pedulla was using at the time - the one with the VHS Video case for a compartment.

(Left) 1986 MVP. In June of '87 of I was visiting Boston with my girlfriend who was there on business. I called Mike Pedulla to see if I could get a tour and he obliged. At the end I asked if he had anything for sale direct or at an artist rate (I was playing in a band looking to get signed out of Philly and figured I'd try and wrangle something). He said no, but also that he had just retired a couple sales demos that had made their way around the country and a local shop had them on consignment. I got directions and they had this one and a red one, as well as a sweet amber one with great flame that was out of my price range. Never been a fan of red, and at $800 this didn't bury my bank account. It served as my main bass for years.

(Right) 1983 EMS. Never knew if the EMS was the precursor to the MVP or the Inteceptor, or the bastard child of the two. (Anybody know?). But I'd always lusted for one since before I bought my Buzz as there was one in the 8th St. Music window. Got this cheap off eBay a few years back. Needs some TLC currently, which I kind of figured after talking to the guy. I'm hoping it doesn't involve a new truss rod, but it'll still be worth it when I'm done. Unlike many I prefer this set of electronics to any of the others they've used, so I'm happy to get this on in playing shape and hold onto it.


I've also had a blue Thunderbolt 5, an MVP 5, an old Inteceptor I bought as a project and sold as a project, and a sweet yet very heavy Cocobola Thunderbass 5. All have since departed, mainly because I've decided that I'm really just a 4 string slinger.

Glad to be a part of the club.

dont forget.. pedullas made after around 1989 or so have the dual acting truss-rod that you need the wood handle truss rod adjuster.. and that style of truss rod turn the opposite way than a regular truss rod... so turn clockwise will loosen and counter clockwise to tighten.IIRC.. I played pedullas for years and years.. wish i still had my 87 MVP.

I've had this bass since last Thursday. Secured a truss rod wrench on Friday night and started to try and set the bass up. The action/bow in the neck was, well, pretty bad. I was able to tighten the rod about 1/3 of a turn, which did bring it down, but not as much as I would ideally like.
Here's the thing, I can't seem to get the thing any tighter! Feel like I could break off the head stock if I pry it any more.
Now, since this is my first and only Pedulla, I'm wondering if any of you have any ideas for me? Is there a neck adjustment under the pick guard I could use, or is the rod, under the cap on the head stock my only option?
BTW - I am really growing fond of the sound of this bass! I thought, being a single pup bass, it's tone would be somewhat restrictive, but once I put new strings on it, soncially, it came to life.
I'm also quite fond of the thin neck and only wish I could get the action just a bit lower.

Thanks, Jedi. These are the electronics that appeared thru about '87 or so, when they moved to a simplified arrangment without switches.

Let's go counter-clockwise from the selector switch...

3-position pickup selector (neck-both-bridge)
Neck pickup volume
Bridge pickup volume
Pre-amp switch with LED
Pre-amp volume (acted as a Master when on)
Master Tone

After this they went to a simplified arrangement that swapped out the 3-way for pan/blend knob, and got rid of the LED on the switch, which I liked a lot because you could tell when your battery was getting weak by the LED dimming. Shortly after that they got rid of the switch and it went to a 3 knob arrangement.

Maybe it's because I'm used to it, but I have a strong preference for this set-up because of the versatility. Sure, a blend pot is nice, but I can blend on my own in the middle position, and for me it's a lot easier to throw a switch than it is to turn a knob to get just the bridge pickup. And with the knob twist you lose your blend where I can throw the switch back to center and have the same amount of neck pickup as I had before. I ran the bass in active mode 95% of the time, but having the option to go otherwise was nice, particularly when I'd be doing a gig with the headliner's amp and I'd be overdriving the front end of a small tube head or something.

When I was going to restore the Interceptor I had I wrote to the folks at Pedulla and Bartolini asked for a schematic for this era's electronics but neither seemed to have anything. Bartolini didn't offer the electronics stock and couldn't quite figure out what to do to get the LED wired in. I'm no electronic genius by any stretch, but they are and I was counting on them for assistance. That was the main reason I abandoned my project.

As a side note, getting the EMS out for the photo inspired me to get the nut/trussrod issue corrected. My local luthier informed me it wasn't as big an issue as I thought so I should be playing it in short order, so I'm pretty excited about that.

What exactly was wrong with the nut/trussrod on your bass (I'm guessing a snapped-off truss rod end). And - more importantly - what was your luthier's fix?

I agree....prefer my '86 to my '93's electronics (AND truss rod nut/adjuster!)

Problem was that the rod was about as tight as it could go but I still had too much relief, and the nut had actually been pushed out of place by the truss rod adjustment nut. For all intents and purposes, it had been overadjusted and was carving into the wood of the neck instead of pushing against it.

Solution was to clean out the area where the wood had been gnarled and place 2 brass plates in the adjustment cavity around the rod and between the neck wood and the adjustment nut. Now the nut pushes against the plates and not against the wood. Simple, elegant fix. He reglued the nut and I've got a great playing bass. He said there wasn't much give left in the rod, but the bass has medium guarge strings on there, so I'm not going any heavier and will likely ratchet the string gauge down a notch next time I change.

If you're looking for a great repair guy in Lehigh Valley/Delaware Water Gap area, Frank Finocchio is the man.

Just got mine this week!! I always wanted one and I was soo close to buying it back in 2001 but I picked an American Jazz Deluxe V for almost 900 less than what they were asking for the pedulla.
I picked her up from a local guy off craigslist for $1000.00 The trust rod is not stripped. the body got some wear and tear from his gigs. Overall the thing is sweet! Im so satisfied with it im thinking about selling the Jazz to make up for the loss.
