It's hard to capture just how deep that quilt is, and there is a lot of movement as you shift angles:

The figuring in the ebony board really gels with the red heart quilt maple top:

The maple body has some killer flaming and marking going on. Those black lines are part of the natural marking of the wood:

This picture didn't turn out as well as I'd like, but you can see some of the flaming in the body (and neck!), as well as some of the red and black markings in the maple. Check out the ebony control cavity cover!

Again, the flaming didn't really photograph well, but I didn't expect the back to put on nearly as much of a show as the front of this bass! :cool:

This bass feels incredibly comfy. The finish on the neck is just so inviting! I've played a number of Pedulla's, and this is definitely the nicest feeling/playing/sounding of Mike's basses that I have had the opportunity to try. The tone is just phenomenal, too! It has that MTD-like clarity, but with more beef and punch, and a bit more roundness. I know that I'm still on the honeymoon, but I keep pinching myself to make sure this is real.

If I sound overly excited by this bass, it's because I am! :D :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :cool:

Hi Tom, is this bass a new assimilation to the Borg or a loaner for a BGM review?

Well, as it turns out, Ed Friedland will be reviewing a 5-string Nuance for BGM, but after seeing them at Winter NAMM, I decided that I had to have one for myself, and Michael was more than willing to accommodate me. :D I think I am going to add a D-tuner to it, though. More and more, I find myself migrating towards 4-strings with D-tuners, as they can cover 95% of what I play, and I get a different vibe when I'm playing a 4-banger. Plus, in my current band, I sing a lot more than I used to, so having one less string to contend with is helpful. :smug:

So after reading through the "show your ramps" thread that keeps popping up, I wonder if anyone has a ramp on their Rapture? I have noticed that Pedulla has made it an option and I might send them an email once I get my pre sorted about making me one. I find my self playing over the bridge pickup a lot and catch myself getting lazy and letting my thumb go all the way through the strings onto the body! Once I notice it, I clean it up, but it is generally when I go "why was that line so awkward" that I realize it. I think I would enjoy the tonal options it would offer me (1/2" in front or behind bridge pu can be night and day!).

On the pre thought, I am just not loving the Suhr 3-band and have an email out about the original bart pre, but anybody try these barts passive? I'd like to have an idea of what I might be getting into before I go adding wires or bypassing things.

No worries! That is upstairs from my office. The 70's basement carpet survives! :D

I've played that Nuance a bunch more, and I am loving it every more each time I get it out. This is one special bass! :eek: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :cool:

How many of you folks have played a Nuance? I've been playing mine at every practice since I picked it up, and each time, I bring along another "top contender" to compare it to. Man, each week this bass seems to come out either clearly on top or else in a dead heat with some of my absolute favorite instruments.

I have not played one yet but would like to. How much different is it than a Thunderbolt? The specs and shape don't seem that different? I love my Thunderbolt but wonder how different this one could be???

never had the chance to try a NUANCE, and won't be able for a long time i guess.

Care to tell us what the "top contenders" were, and how they compare?

I used to own a Thunderbolt, and while I liked it a good bit, and it was certainly a very high quality bass, it didn't really "wow!" me, and I ended up trading it for something else.

The Nuance feels/plays similar in many regards, but the tone seems more bright, open, clear, and articulate - though somehow at the same time meaty, full, and forceful. By contrast, I recall my Thunderbolt being more round and a bit more vintage sounding.

As I understand it, the pickups are different, and the preamp certainly is. Also, you have predominantly rosewood boards on the Thunderbolt versus ebony on the Nuance.

I could see many players preferring the Thunderbolt to the Nuance, btw. It's just that to me, at least, the Nuance offers a unique voicing within the Pedulla line, and if folks have not heard one, I think it's definitely worth checking out.

It's a bit early to make any final decisions, but for me, my "top contenders" include MTD, Sadowsky, Skjold, Nordstrand and Dingwall. This bass is right up there with the best of this bunch. :cool:

Thanks Tom..good to know. I will definitely have to try one out. I would generally agree that the Thunderbolt is more of a vintage or traditional sound. Mine has a birdseye maple board which changes the character a bit. But, they definitely tend to be on the rounder side of the tonal spectrum.
