To be fair, he said it was a Z and this is the entry level ABZ model in the custom line. Pricey, but this one’s rather low on the ridiculous meter. Not sure what they were doing tone wise. Most of the demo was dark and thuddy. A few of the clips sound more “normal”. It IS a beautiful specimen though. That blue is right up my alley.
@Element Zero Straight after the intro of the player, the bass sounds muffled. Weird, because it sounded much better at the start of the video.
Was thinking this myself. Never played one, but I hear it's supposed to have "a great/awesome B string"). From what I heard, it almost wasn't there (er..here).
I'm guessing it's just the way they eq'd/recorded this example.

The Bass Channel's videos usually sound muddy to me. And yes, that's a good looking bass.
I have an ABZ with wenge neck and Glock preamp but it has different pickups. Mine does not sound anywhere near as "dull" sounding as this bass comes across in most of the clips.

The pic doesn't really do justice, but yeah. The blue one in the OP vid is really nice too though. Have you posted details on the one you just ordered yet?
I guess I will post videos of me playing in church when I get it. It is a Chinese/Canadian bass, not a fancy custom.

That Blue one in the OP is pretty nice, too. Really not sure what's going on in the video, you have to try pretty hard to make Dingwalls sound like that, IMO!

Wow, congratulations it's a lovely sounding bass. Personally, I'm going to move to at least one 34" Scale Five String. Years ago I was considering a Torzal Twist Bass from Little Guitar works in Austin, but post covid they have moved out of my price range. So these days I'm looking into having a Lakland 54-94 built later this year. Then again I may just leave well enough alone. You've made a excellent choice.

The ABZ is my only experience with a Dingwall.
There was a guitar show going on during the Montreal Jazz Festival the year I attended (last time I saw Jack Bruce) and Sheldon was manning his own booth. Interesting to talk with him about his designs. It was a pretty incredible bass and not too expensive back then…only about $3K new. I was surprised how quickly I could adapt to the fanned fret scaling. A few months later I found an all passive Afterburner for sale on Craigslist for $1400, but the sale fell through. That was as disappointing as the time I couldn’t pony up $650 fast enough for a used Carl Thompson

As a died-in-the-wool flats guy, I found the buzzing of the roundwounds so prominent and distracting that I was unable to appreciate the instrument.
