Nice bass, Tom! Congratulations!!!

Now you see why I just couldn't part with my 5L despite your oh-so-tempting trade offer. I'm still amazed that I didn't go through with it, but the 5L just plays so well and has such tone.

FWIW, the 5L has the same electronics configuration as the XL, though the pickups on the 5L have different spacing. I like the XL/5L electronics package a lot. I also have a PJ which has great tone, and Chef is spot-on in his description of it.

I'd consider configuring yours as a PJ. It's a great combination. I'm thinking of having a new wiring harness built for mine so that I can easily switch out between a PJ and XL configuration.

I haven't done this yet, but I think they do have templates.
There were some on the Rev site last I looked, but I forget for what models.

Welcome aboard Tom! Nice color! I like my rosewood neck better than my maple neck, but it's all good! I think the 'fish went through a vvt, xl, back to vvt life cycle. when I got my first fish, I emailed Joe and he could have converted to an xl easily, but I never did it. I liked the pup switch on the 5L, but honestly, w/ the vvt I usually leave both pups full on and roll off the tone as needed. I too am interested to see an in-depth review by Tom (and maybe some Skjolds for sale in the classifieds:D) There have been numerous discussion re: the price surge in 'fish on the used market, but these things are worth $800-$1K in my opinion based upon the neck, tone, look and mojo--and the light weight! It will be interesting to see if Rev basses come back and in what form.

As much as I hate to do it, I've got to part with the White Fish again. :crying: I've got it listed in the TB Classifieds. I'll give it a week before moving to Evil-Bay (Which is becoming more Fish Friendly these days!) I would give a Better Deal to a Reverend Club Member, if anyone is interested...

Road Runner / G&L work fine. That 's what I use for my Creamsickle 'fish.

Tone of a PJ 'fish

OK - so I'm maybe a little left of center for this group but - to me the stock Rever pickups fall into either 'lackluster' or just plain 'generic' sounding. Heresy, I know...

Stock, both the 'fish I've had came across as punchy and 'focused' in a very solid body way. After pickup upgrades, they both took on more of a semi hollow/Dano kind of thing. More detail in the upper mid's, a rounder low end. You here more of the low end 'compression' that occurs in a semi hollow. It's a more nuanced sound and when it goes to disk - you can easily tell the Reverend from just another Fender derivative...

I also noticed that the stock PJ had less cut than the stock JJ. I gigged the pair together a bunch last winter. The white one, now Bart's white one was strung with Thomastic Super Alloy's and was my number one player for a bit there. The Creamsickle bass has Jazz Flats and well - my inner Chrs Squire emerged for a while there!

As basses go, I think the PJ configuration is really the way to go with a Reverend though. Ultimately the JJ, while it cut's through had a less complex tonality. the PJ is just a more interesting bass to listen to.

I've found that for recording more often than not, I'm using the P solo'ed. Live I use both full up and roll the P back a bit when I want that burpy J thing emphasized.

As most of you remember I'm using Aero Type 1's in the Creamsickle bass. I'm going to swap those out for a while and try a set of Lawrences. I expect to reinstall the Aero's shortly thereafter but I have to see ...

I dunno. The existing P is I think, slightly ahead of the traditional P sweet spot. The cavity for the bridge pickup is rearward of the sweet spot... tough call. It would only take a sheet of PG material and an hour's time to find out ...

I would still love to hear one of these with a Dark Star installed somehow. It would require cutting formica to do it though not too much. Not something I'm willing to do on mine ...

Before you go cutting things up, I would highly recommend you swap out the P bass pickup for something gucci and play it like a P for a bit. I really, really like what it does in my setting. It's very much the P vibe but somehow more interesting ...

nice color but the neck description is a little frightening ... nother comes to the northwest that doesn't need truss tweaking has been my experience. Wood is truly a living thing in this corner of the planet ...
