people either love the looks or they don't, but i've heard of very few people who have spent any length of time playing a fish that have any complaints about the tone and playability. (although some people don't care for the neck dimensions). i happen to love the looks, playability, neck and tone. if I had to do without any one of those factors, I'd give up looks long before any of the other characteristics. IMHO, YMMV etc. ad infinitum

Well, I FINALLY got a chance to jam through my XL last night, and oh, momma, was it a blast! These basses really play nicely (which I had already been enjoying 'unplugged'), and their amplified tone it both unique and compelling. I love the blend of clarity, balance, and growl. Some basses with this same level of growl (hard to describe, but I hope you know what I mean, here) end up sounding somewhat limited in the range of tones they can cover, or else they may be very mid-focused, and not as extended in the lows or highs. With the XL, at least, you can certainly dial in a 'low-fequency focus' or an 'upper-mid focus', but in the 'up' position (both in parallel?), it is nicely balanced, with deep, full lows, smooth yet growly mids, and killer high end articulation.

Can you tell I am hooked? I haven't changed the strings yet, but I am guessing that it'll get even better (relative to my preferences, at least) with a fresh set of SS rounds on it.

Now for a 5'er....

I tell you what really put me over the top on needing to get a Fish. It was playing Trevor's XL through my Orange stack at the last B3​ GTG. That was a nigh-religious experience, and one that I look forward to replicating soon! I just need to get the wife and kids out of the house...

+1... when I've played and heard Matt's I really dug it. The output of those basses is so high that they are the perfect thing for really driving a tube pre into warm overdrive... and as you state above, they have that 'growl and grit' build in but they never get woolly or muddy. Not my personal tone preference, but I sure do dig it for what it is... kind the the 'rock' equivalent of a 'J on Steroids' or 'P on Steroids' type thing. I'm looking forward to hearing Matt's through the Mesa 600. That should kill!

I still can't figure out how they get that huge output out of a passive circuit. These are the only basses that I've had to use the padded or 'active' input on an amp!

I would love to hear my P/J through that Orange stack! Impractical for me and the gigs I play, but it sure would be awesome.

+1 all the way around. I had heard that they had a hot output, but hearing one through and all-tube head REALLY got my attention.

What I found when I tried to PJ a JJ is that the P didn't fit. The JJ I tried this on was an older one with the skunk stripe neck. So my conjecture is that the older JJs won't fit a P in the neck pickup route but later ones will. I wonder if the skunk stripe neck can be used as the indicator of whether it will work or not . . .

I still have an 8.7K P pickup (without adjustable poles unfortunately) that I got from Reverend and a black PJ pickguard for future conversion of a JJ to PJ to back up my bugeye PJ.

You can see it faintly through the clear PG on my white one, the hole does seem to be quite a bit larger than the one on your black JJ

Glad you're liking yours, Tom. Now you've got me GAS-ing for a tube head and NV610 to run my Reverends into (though they do sound great just through the Brunetti).

Some day I should take the PG off my PJ/JJ convertable 'fish and snap a picture of the insides. I'm loving the way it's playing and sounding right now, though.

I also took the rounds off my 5L last night and put the TI flats back on. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great with rounds, but this bass was BORN to wear TI flats.

HELLO, Tone!

Eight basses really seems like wayyy too many for someone with no gigs right now, so once again, I had been considering turning loose one of my fish. Since the BH5 is such a great rare beast, and I'm keeping the PJ, I had been thinking once again of selling the 5L. After putting the flats back on, I'm keeping it. No other bass has the tone of the 5L with flats. Wow. TONE. I should just give up and accept the fact that I'm a 'fish addict. Maybe I can part with a Sadowsky instead.
