Thanks. Even though, I must say, I've never seen a stock 4003 which I didn't like.
I like the FireGlo a lot. But think the coolest Ric I've seen here is the red one with the black pick guard and black binding. Also the white body with black pick guard and black binding is cool.
Anyone using chromes on their Ric's? It seems the popular tones are the Paul McCartney sound with flats, or the Chris Squire growl with steel rounds.
Funny you'd ask that now. I have been switching between the Ric nickle rounds and Chromes on my new 4003 for days now, so much so that I broke the A string on the rounds. Undecided which to use.
I love Chromes on my Stingray and PJ, but I kinda feel something's missing when its on the 4003, want a little more clarity and attack. I was satisfied with neither the rounds nor the Chromes until I removed the pickup cover. The Chromes have much nicer attack once played over the treble pickup. I'll keep the Chromes on for the moment and try it again with the band (still trying to EQ the 4003 in the mix). Currently I'm on 2.5 bass volume, 10 treble volume, 10 bass tone, 7.5 treble tone, boosting mids on the amp.
I will likely give GHS Pressurewounds a try if I can find any in the shops. And also a treble bezel.
After decades of using Roto-Swing bass strings while I was a prog-rock bassist; emulating Squire and the rest of the British bassists, with exception of Mc Cartney, I grew tired of the ting-n-tang of rounds. I returned to my roots and began to play blues with a passion; not that rounds don't work in Blues, but in late 1997, I put a set of La Bella Jamerson flats on my '78..haven't changed them since. No matter what I have used; amps stings effects..whatever..I never sounded exactly like Squire and never like Mc Cartney.
On my other basses, I use rounds on my 2001 ZON, '99 Precision, 2009 Sqiuer jazz active 5 and flats on the '99 Fender AB-1 as the bronze sounded too much like a bass-guitar. I think that if you own several basses, it's a good idea to have a mix of rounds and flats for your overall tonal palette. As I am currently not gigging, I don't change strings as often as most of you probably do.

John- a lot of people have recommended chromes for ric basses,and i have to say i tried a set on my 4000,and also on a jazz bass,and did not care for them at all. I have had similar experiences with most daddario strings,they just feel too stiff and tension-y for my taste.
Edit-what i do like are DR sunbeams for rw,and would like to try out a set of dr flats,which are on a round core,just like the old ric/maxima strings from the 60's/70's. Dr strings are great in general.

I put Chromes on one of my V63s and it has changed it from a bass I pulled out intermittently to one I've bonded with. It just works.
+1, Chromes and V63s work very nicely together.
Although, I currently have TI Jazz Rounds on mine.
