Hey guys after a little advice. I should hopefully be getting a '06 rickenbacker 4003.
I have read a bit about strings really eating through the frets. Is this true? If so. What strings are a wise choice? could any one also kindly point me in the right direction of a Ricky Luthiers in the sussex/west sussex area?

I use nickel rounds which are kind to the frets. But the frets on the 4003 seem to have good wear resistance

The cost difference will depend entirely on what you find online -- dig and search, and you'll find deals.

As for which one is "better", it's going to depend on what you like and why you like it.


Personally, I would go with the Hipshot.
A. I had a Badass on my first Ric before it was stolen. I wasn't impressed.
B. The Hipshot is designed as a drop-in replacement, meaning you don't have to worry about drilling any holes and getting the alignment and scale perfect.
C. The Hipshot is easier on your hands, if your playing style involves coming into contact with the bridge.
D. The Hipshot is easier to adjust. Some people have problems with the saddles moving, but it's relatively easy to fix -- I have never had a problem with it.

Those are my opinions, nothing more. To make a more fully informed choice, you should get the opinion of someone who prefers Badasses to Hipshots.

Not sure where you read this. I own two fretted Rics and both have small frets, but they don't show any wear yet--one of those basses has seen more than 100 shows! All with nickel rounds. I wouldn't worry much unless you're one of those Roto-heads, in that case there might be problems.

Circle K Strings do very well on a Rickenbacker.

I finally got it functional again! I knew it was going to be time consuming, but I really didn't know what I was getting myself into. It's still not finished -- I have to tweak the controls, and I want to swap out the Rickenbacker name plate, but the main effect has been achieved. (Whew!)

Hey Jaymi, what happens when you stick two quarter pound P-bass pickups in the neck slot on a Rick?

There are two Seymour Duncan Bassline P-bass pups and a Carvin humbucking J, with a volume control for each. Hipshot bridge, DR Black Beauties, Schaller tuners, Schaller straplocks. The pick-guard turned out pretty damn good, if I do say so myself. It really grabs the ambient light, and seems to both shimmer and glow. I got a few pictures to try and show the effect -- the camera gets it OK, but not great.

What amp will you play that killer bass through?

pretty slick! I have not done much with routing under the guard but that's what had to be done to make this thing scream eh? Now, if you rework the jacks and make them both mono and split the pickups, you could run it to 2 amps and then make it GIGANTIC sounding!!!!

Well, I have several options, but probably a pair of SWR combos.

The thing is, to do the bass justice, I need two amps. Those two P-bass pickups aren't arranged neck-middle, they're arranged bass-treble. One pup for E&A, one pup for D&G. It almost sounds like two different bass players playing. I still have to get used to it, it's a little disconcerting having the sound jump around like it does.

And after the mods, it feels different, enough so that I will have to re-learn how to play it (and/or modify it a bit more).

I started a separate thread giving a lot more details about the process, but I didn't have to do any of the routing -- that had already been done. And about the jack arrangement...

The Carvin J pup and the P pup covering E&A go to the main jack, the D&G pup goes to the other jack. When there is no plug in that jack, the signal continues to the main jack. When there is a plug in it, however, the D&G signal follows the cord, and does not continue to the main jack.

So it gets a stereo sound, alright, but not what you normally think of. It's a whole lot weirder.
