I know what you are saying, but strictly speaking the tension on the string is equal from one end to the other. What is different is that lesser distance from the supported end means it is less likely to move it.

I got it used here. It's a pickguardian.

Originally I ordered a pearliod from puckguardian, but they were pretty slow at shipping outmy order. The swirl popped up and canceled the new pearliod. :o

Regarding the bridge, keep in mind that this bass has had a made-for-Gibson Schaller bridge on it for the last 30 years. On my previous Rick, I replaced the original Rick bridge with a Badass. I do not care for the original bridge, at least the ones from decades ago (perhaps they have changed since then -- if so, I can't say anything about the new ones).

As far as this Hipshot goes, so far I like it, but I don't yet have any real experience with it. Would I recommend it? Sure. Will I still recommend it in a year? Don't know.

Ok, thanks for your opinion! :) I've been thinking about replacing the bridge for a long time now, I think I'll be giving it a try...

Interesting! Now that I finally own a 4003 Ric, it seems to me like 90% of the Ric magic on the pickup side is happening at the treble pup. I love the 4003 vintage mode!!!! In addition the front pup adds these creamy lows, and if you want even more lows put the treble pup on modern mode.
I will never dare to change anything on my 4003, too afraid to "damage" its magical tone. But if I had several rics like you do, I guess I would be a bit more "brave" to try something.

Fellow Ric Players -

I pulled out the Ric this weekend and used it as my primary gig bass (as opposed to my usual 2008 MIA P-Bass) and I LOVED it! First time I've ever gigged MOST of the night with the Ric I've owned since February and dreamed of for 30 years...

Yeah, I don't know a much better way to put it than that. Essentially we're looking at a transverse wave on the string and it's maximum amplitude should be in the middle of the two ends (nut/finger to bridge), so a neck pickup will most often fall under that large amplitude section and its magnetic field can have a bigger impact on movement.

Glad to hear this. That's how I felt when I got my first Ric and had been gigging a Jazz. Between a Ric and a Precision I think you've got the bases well-covered.

My Dream Bass!!! It would match my Gibby Doubleneck and I would have all the workings of a Rush Tribute(minus the high voice!!)

Edit to add that I replied to the Ric dblneck thread, sorry if out of context here, I've owned a dozen Rics and I'm currently in search of another as I am Rick Less!!

I've been using my new RIC as my main gigging bass for the past month now. Every show it just seems to get better and better. I can't believe I waited all these years to get one.

One thing I did notice that I don't care for is how you have to intonate the bridge. Doable yes, but a PITA. however well worth it for the pleasure the RIC gives me.

QUESTION 1
Looking for suggestions. Babicz or Hipshot Transtone bridge to replace the stock bridge? I don't want the Hipshot Ric bridge, way over priced and is basically nothing new, saddle set up is pretty basic standard. Any other suggestions, (outside a Badass, even though Ged did it). With the Bab and the Trans, I am just wondering if anyone has experience with either, and if the action will still be able to set low (not like the korny guy low though).

Question 2
Recently the bass makes a crunchy-fuzz sound through the neck p'up (like it doesn't have enough power or the speaker is toast - but the amp is fine, that's just the type of sound), clear when switch to solo bridge. Is this the pot or the p'up going?
