Yeah, that threesome is the first "Rickenbacker Confluence" -- just three guys. That's me on the right, Ric5 in the middle, and Steve Cooper (?) on the left. The occasion was my visit to Ric5 in June/July 2004 when he lived outside of Detroit. I sold him a Rick and had him do VVT mods on two 4004 basses. We reported our little soiree on the RRF and I dubbed it a "confluence" of Rick basses. In May 2005, the Ohio Rick Mafia put together something more formal in Columbus. The other photos above show the attendees at the Middle Atlantic Rickenbacker Confluence (or Festival if you prefer) held at Pick of the Ricks in Lindenwold, NJ a couple of years ago, and the inside shot was taken at RIO (Ricks in Ohio) also a couple of years back. That's me front row with the White V63.

Yep, that guy is Steve Cooper. I know him. :) Holding my AzureGlo 75 and my 73 MG 4001 is being held by Ric5.

The neck feels about the same as a Dec '11 4003 I played last month, perhaps the area near the nut feels a tad thicker but working up the neck it feels more like that on my April '98 4001V63. I think part of this is due to the fact that I have become accustomed to thinner, lower tension strings (TI Jazz Rounds and Flats); I plan to put one or the other on this bass, but I also have a set of Fodera Victor Wooten Signature nickel rounds strings (40-95) that I may try on this bass.

What fun! Here's my 74, bought by me in Baltimore, MD (a birthday present from my parents). Still in very good condition. The rainbow colors are electrical tape - the band I was in at the time had so much equipment that we color coded our cases for the roadies. I set up the program, so I took the coolest code for myself.

I have a few questions for you Rickenrockers! (see what I did there ;) )

I've always loved the Rick sound, specifically the high gain bridge pickup, but I already have 4 basses and can't see myself buying another one in the near future. That being said, I love tinkering and customizing what I do have, and I want to make them all as unique as possible.

My idea is to switch out the bridge positioned jazz pickup in one of my 4 strings to a high gain Rick pup. A little different maybe, sure, but I'm imagining the tonal possibilities when mixed and matched with the P-bass pickup in the neck!

I've been searching around the Rick website and can't seem to find any detailed info on their pickups. No dimensions, tech specs or anything like that.

So here are my questions (all referring to the high gain pickups):

1. What's the difference between the high gain neck and bridge pickups from a technical stand point? Are they wired to sound different? Or is the difference in sound due only to their positioning?

2. Does the whole mounting system for the bridge pickup have anything to do with the sound?

I ask these two questions first, because a neck pickup in the Rick boutique is 75$ whereas the bridge pickup is 150$. If I can get away with getting the neck pickup and getting the same results in the bridge position as a bridge pickup would, then all the better.

3. What are the dimensions of pickups themselves (both bridge and neck)? What string spacing do they allow for? What are the total dimensions including mounting holes/hardware?

4. Are the high gain pups active or passive? And what value of pot should I match them with?

Anything else besides this I should know about?
