I used to have a '72 Jazz Bass (that a friend of mine now has) that I modded in a few ways. I put a Rick hi-gain neck pickup in the neck/mid position of the bass along with a Schaller 3D bridge so I could adjust the string spacing a bit closer together to balance between the Rick pickup and the stock Jazz Bass bridge pickup. Then I rewired to controls with two volume controls (don't remember the values, probably 250KΩ) and added a toggle switch that I could select as a fixed tone control. The bass sounds awesome, still does in my friend's hands. :cool:

How much work was it to get the Rick pickup into your jazz bass? Was it a pain routing out the hole to fit it in there? We're there ugly gaps or do the sizes correspond nicely enough to each other?

That sounds like a cool bass Jeff. Do you have pics? I have always thought about putting a Ric pickup in a P Bass, but not in the P position, rather at the Ric neck position under the second octave. I figure that would ease string spacing concerns too.

OK! I've never been a fan of aliases because I like "knowing" whom I'm talking (typing) with! Good to "hear" from you! I'm still working on the Rickenbacker bass book, now under contract with Hal Leonard/BackBeat Books. Hope to deliver it to them this summer!

Here is my 2008 Rickenbacker 4003 bass:

It is a beauty for sure and sounds great. I played it nearly exclusively for about two years after purchasing it (I went 50/50 in with my Dad who also plays bass...) but have acquired new gear recently and have not played it at all. However, I think I am going to string it up, re-adjust some things, and try to start playing it again.

I did this a LONG time ago, early '80s IIRC. Nothing fancy to look at, really, I just "chiseled" out :eek: :D the area I needed to drop the pickup in, which is squarer than the neck Jazz pickup, obviously, and cut out the existing pickguard. I was more into the tone than the looks, at the time. Sorry, no pics, I'll have to ask my friend to do a couple for me.

He currently has some no name fretless neck on the bass, and it sounds great as a fretless bass. :bassist:
