I just picked up a white Rickenbacker 4003 bass from a collector. It has black binding, and was made in 1997.
Does anyone know what color the pickguard and trussrod cover should be? Should they be be black or white?
Both on it now are white, but in the case is a black trussrod cover. Could it have been swapped?
I can post a picture later this afternoon.

Thank you for that information. Searching for images on Google didn't turn up much either. Somebody had one, and changed the trussrod & pickguard to white as well.
I'll call the collector and see if he still has the black pickguard.
Here's a picture I just took of it next to my black Stingray 5, for color comparison.
Also: Should you be able to see the cable cavity through the white pickguard like below?

Heck if i was you, i'd check if there's a Rick-like serial number on the input jack plate and under the bridge pickup just in case.

It's certainly real. This is the 5th Ric I've had. Don't have the others anymore though. I also verfied the number to get the 1997 build date. Someone on the Ric forum said he had a white pickguard on his white (but yellowing) Ric that was somewhat seethrough as well.

Here's my '96 Jetglo 4003. It's been modded with a set of Bartolini Ric replacements (incl. the mute add-on pickup), so it is completely hum-free...

The stacked control was wired as bridge volume at the top and add-on PU vol at the bottom. After experimenting with it for a while, I realised that I mostly used the add-on PU together with the neck. So I hardwired them in parallel and returned to the original vol/vol, tone/tone control layout.

I suppose I did it more for the sound than for the looks. I need to get my priorities straight.

Very sharp! How about a full size picture? That's the first Montezuma I've seen with the vintage neck pickup.

Here is my 1973 4001. All original except I recently installed the Hipshot Bridge and also I put in a push/pull pot to toggle between the 0.0047 cap. Now I can get the 4001 sound or the 4003. Love this bass.



the ric in action, the video starts with me playing my Stingray but the 4001 makes an appearance around the 1:20 mark.
