Oh ok, I do know curupay, but it's neither patagonian nor related to rosewood. But I guess patagonian rosewood makes a better selling name. It's perfectly suitable for a fretboard, if I recall correctly a friend of mine used it on classical guitars for fretboards and for back and sides.
Haha, yeah, harder than ebony -- "hard enough" is a bit of an understatement! I have come across curupay before online, but have never seen (or tried to lift) a board IRL.
The package was surprisingly dense. I didn't realize it was harder than ebony!
Looking at the 2 boards I have for the fingerboard, I'm liking the variegation of the right board.
I agree, the knot in the left board negates it for me.
Thinking through the lamination for the neck. Is there a good reason I can't do something like this?

Conventional wisdom probably says that it's risky to have assymetrical layouts as they could move with the weather in inconsistent or unpredictable ways.
But that said, there was that time that @Big B. took the crazy train all the way to insane town and did this: Fretless five competition: Mad scientist edition

On the one hand this is a bolt on, so if it gets too bad, I can make another one. (We have the technology...).
There is a sick part of me that kinda wants to sit down and calculate the thicknesses required so that the laminations would line up with the frets... but that's probably a step too far.
As far as asymmetry goes, it's going to have a slightly asymmetrical carve on it, as I plan the ridge to go down the line between the horn on the neck and the apex of the volute.
Thats a lot of glue joints, I find it hard to believe it will move differentially. Maybe glue it up with epoxy instead of Titebond so no "creep" is possible?
Definitely not a step too far, but getting the laminations to line up exactly with the frets would be a serious challenge!
It would require a level of precision for thicknessing boards that probably exceeds the capabilites of my meager workshop.
If you put the laminations at an angle, you probably owe it yourself to taper the center lams while you're at it...

Been busy on the Rick-man build, but I've ordered the nut for this and am hoping with some warmer weather this weekend to get the wood cut and laminated for the neck.
I tried laying it out, and I think I might have a build process that will let me make it work. Basically I will need to completely finish the fretboard first, and then build up the layers of the neck, trimming each to thickness on my jointer before adding the next layer.
Colored layers will be walnut, blank layers will be maple.
