Was it possible to install a pope preamp into the SR?? I'm thinking about doing the same, but I need to know if there is room in the cavity for the pope preamp, because the bodies of the SR's are really thin and light. (Which I love)
Thinking about buying an 4 string SR premium, but need to know if the installment is possible in the bass first ;) :D

I measured the cavity of my Ibanez SR5005 to see about putting a Pope into the cavity and it wasn't deep enough. I'm assuming all the SR's are the same Cavity depth but without modifying the Cavity it wouldn't work for me. I went with Aguilar OBP-3 preamps instead in 3 of my Ibanez SR's and BTB's. Sounded great with all 3 basses.

Oh yeah, the tonal options alone made it worth the price and time for install. I need to make some sound clips since it sounds great. The bass boost/cut doesn't get boomy until the highest settings, the mids are VERY usable, and the highs don't get shrill or tinny. I'm very satisfied with the new electronics. I probably could have just upgraded the preamp since I didn't think the MK-1's sounded bad with the newer stock Ibanez preamp BUT I wanted dual coils since sometimes I like that full humbucker sound and sometimes I want that more aggressive single coil sound. The output of the MK5's is a bit hotter than the MK1's, so that's also a plus for me.

I found the same thing with the Pope preamp in a SRX705. The full range of the EQ is usable and the dual mids are just the bomb. The board do take up some space but still pretty flexible for install.

I have an old SR905 with the dreaded MK1 combination. I may have the opportunity to upgrade the preamp to a newer "Ibanez custom electronics" preamp, which includes a a mid freq selection and passive mode with a passive tone control.

I really like the flexibility of the preamp, but haven't heard it or tried it (and won't be able before purchasing).

What's the consensus on the newer preamps? do they actually sound better? It's not like I can't live with the MK1, I just always roll off the highs a little bit.
Should I just wait for a preamp from one of the big names, like Aguilar, Pope, Bartolini, etc?

I've owned several new Ibanez basses that had the custom EQ with mid frequency selector. All was very good for stock preamps.

Yep, the newer preamp is a major improvement over the MK1 preamp (which I have in my older SR650 and I am NOT a fan). I have the newer Ibanez preamp in my SR5SMLTD and it sounds great. I won't be changing it out as it sounds great with the Nordstrands.

I chimed in cause I also had bridges and tuners changed on mine. Don't know how much did you get them, but I got the Mono-Rail IV bridges in quite a bargain. It was no more than 25 USD for 5 pcs.

Though I did the opposite colors. I swapped the cosmo black hardware with gold. And it wasn't on my Soundgear, I did it on my BTB instead. One of the reasons was because 4 of my basses had cosmo-black hardware, so not that I was crazy about gold hardware, it was just nice to make variation since I had never got any bass with gold hardware.
