Hey everyone,
I'm new here, and appreciating the sound gear love!
I'm a SR fan too, hence the 3 Ibanez sound gears.
First I bought the k5, which Ok isn't a true sr but in reality it is a sr with k5 written on it. It's like a SR505? Correct me if I'm wrong.
It's got the glossy maple and bubinga neck if I'm not mistaken, great neck.
But fret alignment ant edge treatments weren't so good. It went to a luthier and became a keeper, it's better than most basses I've ever tried, including expensive ones... but the pu's and electronics on the bass are weak.
Then I got the SR1205 which is pretty much perfect, it didn't need the luthier for alignment or fret edge, because they're just so much better than the standard series.
Also fell in love with Nordstrand at that time.
And last but not least, the SRF705, of which I had issues with.
The first one had several defaults and a buzzing fingerboard... my local shop sent it back.
The second one is the one I have now.
But still, after getting a premium you tend to set a standard for a new bass. And that SRF just didn't match that quality !
So the fretless went to the same Luther as the k5 and now it's brilliant.
He installed a passive / active switch that allows me to have the oldschool passive magnetic pickups sound with volume and blend as on every other SR...
He had a lot work to do on the fingerboard to make it really straight, and that's difference between standard and premium, the quality tests .
Plus the bartolinis mk1 are soon going to leave the SRF, to let some room for the nasty Nordstrand big singles.
Even in passive, the bartolinis are not as good as Nordstrand...
If anyone has upgraded their fretless Ibanez please let me know what you did on it!

I have an SRF706. Ibanez says the magnetic pickups are passive.

I realize that all Piezo's are active. I also realize that many basses have active pre-amp with passive pickups. Can you clarify for me?

I have a Gary Willis Signature GWB-35 which is not really SR, but is kind of an SR. Based on the SR series and will fit in an SR case... not really sure. Is it is --- or is it ain't an SR? Anyways, I have modified it. Dropped some money in there by swaping the stock pickup for a Invalid Link Removed and adding a real pre-amp (3-band) Invalid Link Removed. The volume knob is push pull for active/passive and I have a switch for changing the wiring the poles of the pickup from series to parallel.

Here is me playing that bass 3 years ago. I hear some pitch issues. I hope I am a better player now than I was then. :)
This was captured with a camera on a tripod using the built in mic. Not great sound quality.

Clarification:
Pickups are passive you're absolutely right.
The switch I have, gives me the possibility to bypass the active preamp, which then shuts the piezo off, because they can't work together otherwise.
So passive : only passive pickups
Active : Piezo and pickups preamp'd together.
I always wondered the differences between mine and a GWD ...?

OK, that makes sense. I really love my GWB35 and even more so with the change in pickup and pre-amp. I played a Portamento at the store and it reminded me a lot of the GWB35 but the Portamento had more tonal options and didn't quite have the bite that my GWB35 has after the mods. Was too close for me to have both though. When I heard about the 6 string Portamento, I pre-ordered one. I have only seen one other person on TB say they had a SRF706, so they are a pretty rare item right now.

Here's a clip from my show a couple weeks ago where I'm using my SR5SMLTD. I'm playing through a GK MB Fusion 800 head and GK 2x12-II NEO. Started with a live improve jam (really for a soundcheck) that morphs into a loose translation of a song we do. Enjoy:



Interesting bit about the gig....

We performed in the upstairs lounge at Pianos in NYC. When I got there, the bass player in the band before us was KILLING it on a solo (4 piece - Bass, Keys, horn, drums). Turns out it was Felix Pastorius. Amazing, amazing set of music and next-level musicianship. I had to introduce myself and shake his hand.

Any tips on getting more out of my D & G string on my SR 1205e ? So far I've tried Dunlop Super Bright nickles and the stock Elixirs . The problem is the volume on those strings is low up past the 12th fret . My VMP5 does way better when I have to play up that high , it nails the sound I want on a Petty cover tune we do up high but it would be cool if I didn't have to change basses for that one song . The 1205e kills tonewise except for up there .

probably it's a matter of setting up the pickups' height...

I have sets of all the allen wrenches, but like to have an instrument specific kit in each bass's case.

My SRF706 came with 3 Allen wrenches. They measure 4, 2, and 1.5 mm.
