I don't think that's the issue. Fretless bass guitars sound like fretless bass guitars, not like upright basses.

I've tried a few more things, and I think I'm getting closer to an acoustic sound; it requires a bit of technique as well as tonal adjustments. I might need to use a fret wrap, as it seems like the Aerium has more sustain than I normally hear from an acoustic.

I use a US Army boot blouse across the strings at the bridge for a more URB sound. Front p'up ... treble and mid rolled back ... plucked at the end of the board ... and string mute. Works wonders.

Any kind of mute there works, though. Carol Kaye used a piece of foam rubber didn't she? Anyone who could make that beast SRX700 sound like a muted P bass is a genius imho.

The SRX700 has AlNiCo pickups which are actually tame in comparison to the ceramic magnet PFR pickups in my SRX2.

I just picked up a SR1206E in mint condition. So far I've installed Dunlop straplocks and TI Jazz Flats, and given it a very meticulous set up. I have an Aguilar OBP3 preamp but not sure whether to put it in or not. The Ibanez preamp seems pretty decent as is.

not sure what an srx700 is, but was wondering how a sr650/750 stacks up against a PJ sr800? have also been lookin at the sr500, sr800, sr650, sr750 and sr premiums..
already have a sr300dx (PJ) and it sounds pretty good, considering the price and what appear to be el-cheapo stock pups (dxp/dxj).. p

The SRX line is supposed to be a more aggressive sound. Killed_by_Death is the expert here on that and will chime in on specifics.

Oh man don't tell me that. I've been apprehensive about ordering because of how lakluster/dull they look on Sweetwater. They just look more dull. But, if in person they are how they are as vibrant as they are in this pic... I might order tomorrow.

Phat II is exactly what it says - Bass boost. My first Ibanez has that. Gets nice and fat, like it should. I always leave mine cranked.

I spent a lot of time tweaking this old girl. She's my SR3000 from about 2002 or so (I'm the second owner). The action was pretty high on her when I got her and I thought, "Well, I'll just lower the saddles." Ha ha! The saddles were already as low as they could go. They were all bottoming out on the bridge. The only thing left to do was to shim the neck just a bit to raise the fretboard closer to the strings. So after experimenting with the right thickness of shim, I set the relief and adjusted all the string heights where I wanted them as well as the intonation. Viola! Then I noticed that the sound was sometimes cutting out when I was playing. I thought it might be an intermittent output jack, but traced it down to worn contacts on a very strange battery holder configuration. I cleaned and resprung the contacts and now she is rock solid. What a great bass she is turning out to be!

Dang, all of these Ibby's are bringing me down memory lane and my sellers remorse/pain is rearing its head! Back in the tail end of 2006, I was going through some heavy personal issues and willingly sold my trusted number #1 MIJ Custom Ibanez SR5005MM... I had a bunch of issues with the bass though; the bridge saddles would break and the narrow string spacing hurt when slapping but it was still THE bass for me. I've bought and sold a ton of basses since then but this has been my only regret.

TL.DR ... Super shot in the dark... Anyone own a SR5000MM that would consider possibly selling it to me? I need a main 4 string and I need this to be the one! Thanks.
