yeap, the MK1 are split coil in reverse-P arrangement,
while the BH1 and BH2 are full blade dual coil

IS the SR5005 a 3-piece Mahogany body like the 4005?
Is the 5005 Honduran mahogany or is it the same (cheap) mahogany as 505?

Hello all - new to the group (pretty new to the bass tbh) and this looks like the place for an answer - I'm sure it's been discussed before, but I can't readily find it. Anyway, just got an '08 sr300 and I'm interested in exactly what the "style sweeper" knob does. obviously the difference is easy enough to hear, but I'm not sure specifically what it's doing... anybody want to share some insight on this?
Hi BlitzCraig. I don't own the bass but I think the style sweeper effects the mid frequencies so you can get fuller mids or more of a scooped mid tone. Someone else here will be able to give a better explanation with more detail.

It's actually hosted on Ibanez.com, so I do believe it's legit.
I like the SR300E as a practice bass, and it is very easy to play. But, I don't think I would like to hear what the SR300E sounds like in passive mode, my guess would be very weak and with very little bottom end. I think they developed the power tap to add back some missing bottom end. I think Ibanez in their search for amazing playability at a very convenient price had to sacrifice some tone and without active electronics and the power tap split the bass wouldn't sell.
I'm curious to hear how that turns out. I'd like the ergonomics of an Ibanez with a warmer, thicker and more resonant tone. Putting flats on mine has been an interesting variation.
My understanding of the new power tap switch is that down is Power Tap which is a coil split with a bass boost, center is humbuckers in series, and up is Tap, which is a normal coil split.

All coils are active in the "power tap' position, but they're using caps & resistors to shape the sound differently.

I know there's a perceived bass boost in the incorrectly labeled "Power Tap" switch position, but it's completely passive. There's nothing on that switch that goes straight to the preamp.
Here's how G&L did it with their OMG mode, with capacitors:
The important part of the schematic is in the upper left corner, where the switch controls how the caps interact with the pickups.
Unfortunately I cannot find a demo video of what the OMG mode sounds like, but it's been described as a bass boost, & on the G&L it's a completely passive addendum.
I'm also unsure of what the resistors are for on the "Power Tap" switch PCB, but there are caps on there also.

Thinking about it, the SR300E (this particular one) has given me back those G&L L-2000 sounds w/o the bulky body & heaviness of the G&L. Not to mention that awful 4-inline headstock.
I've now got single-coil sounds, series, & the OMG.
At first I had big crazy dreams, was going to take the finish off it & have it stained & oiled, & completely re-do the wiring.
The more I thought about it, I realized how ridiculous that is. It would be a crazy great bass, though. Lighter & with the key features I want. However, it would be useless from a seller's standpoint & I already have the SR1800E that sounds just like I want it to.
Also, I know what a PITA it would be to re-do the wiring, because normal pots won't fit in those holes. They'd need to be reamed.
I've got gear fund money just sitting in the bank, so I might ask the local luthier this week how much he'd charge me to pull off such a labor-intensive job.
I'd imagine the cost will make me re-think the whole idea!
It would be pretty great to have a 7 lb. bass with single/series switching & a active/passive switch. (or maybe even go fully passive & use those EQ holes as DPDT switches)
Another thing that turned me off about the whole project was that I found out the pickups only have 3 conductors, so parallel is NOT an option.
In comes another aspect I had considered, getting Zen Blades from Nordstrand.
Yes I've checked, & they're drop-in replacements for PowerSpans.
