Question of the day: Want to try fretless and love the SR necks - may sell my breedlove AB which i don't play much.
Options I am thinking about: Pentamento or SRH500F should the Gary Willis also be on the list? not sure about the neck difference. While I know I can not get the coveted upright sound, I would like to get close.

Anyone performed a shim in the neck of an older SR? There's a beat up one I played which was great, but it will eventually need a shim as the bridge is bottomed out.
yes the accucast b IV of the 90s SR800 tends to bottom out so i've had to shim
You will get closer to upright sound with the piezo's in the Portamento. I have both.
If you really want upright sound get a u-bass or the SRH500F.
I think the SRH500F even comes with tape-wounds already on it!

Yeah, the Portamento is solid body. I haven't played the SRH, but you might get closer to upright with that. Definitely with a U-bass, but with my test of one, I found those strings very weird. Sounds the most upright though.
Sorry, I just noticed that you had the SRH in there. That might be better than the Portamento? The Gary Willis is an excellent fretless, but not as upright sounding.
I've answered pecBass same question on The Ibanez Club thread. Like kirk, I also own two out of the three asked. Mine is the Portamento and the Aerium (though mine is the fretted Aerium).
Agree that the Portamento on its piezo would give you upright-ish sound, but any of the Aeriums will get you even closer to having an upright-ish sound. Not only the fretless Aeriums (SRH500F/SRH505F) but also the fretted ones (SRH500/SRH505).
All of the SRH come with D'Addario XL Chromes flatwound. The same thing with all Portamento models. So, no factory equipped tapewounds.

1994 SR1300PM. It has Padauk front and back with a mahogany center.
They're making it with Vol/passive tone stack, blend, high, mid, low, act/pass switch, mid freq switch.
So it'll drop right in.

^ NICE. Did you order direct or through BBG? I would love to have a complete custom pre made for my SR650PBAM - Volume (Push/Pull for active/passive), Blend, Stacked Treble/Bass, Stacked Mids, Tone (push/pull for coil tap).
That particular one sure has a very nice wood grain, and it's got a solid Ash body like my SR600 which are so nice looking, and lightweight. You got a looker there! These days, I'd much rather have a stained body than a gloss finish.
