You might want to consider the models with Bartolini pickups. I chose that over the more expensive Nordstrand models for exactly the reasons you mention. The Barts are humbuckers, sound great in any blend setting (although I prefer NOT the center position), no single coil noise, and the basses play and feel wonderful. I bought the 700 series.

The only thing I'd caution you about is that the Barts are a much more distinct voice. The Nordstrands are more neutral in comparison. To my ears, the Barts sound modern, can really growl, and also play soft/deep. They do not get anywhere near a neutral sound or a Fender sound. If that's your cup of tea, then you'll have what you want with the great Ibanez neck for less money.

I just cant figure the thinking of Ibanez to put single colil pickups with their inherent noise in a top of the range bass??? surely the tone of them isnt that stellar...and from what i can gather these pick ups in the the Nordenstrand range is available in noise free humbuckers in the same format

In a well-shielded bass, single coil hum is not a serious issue, especially at stage volume.

How many Jazz basses are out there being played by people all the time? And a lot of those aren't shielded at all.

The tone is fine, not anything to write home about, but it's perfectly useable.

But I do agree that using big splits as opposed to big singles would have been a better idea. Those are hum-cancelling.

Hum cancelling is important for me because I play at home in quiet rooms where the slightest little noise will irritate me.

Well IMO the Premiums are top notch (electronics included); if that's not your cup of tea, fine, but the instrument is very well thought. Those pickups sound awesome. I'd say your expectations were unrealistic - single coils are what they are, you can't expect them to behave like a different type of pickup. By comparison to a Fender Jazz though, the Premium is quiet as a mouse, so I don't see what the problem is. And tbh I prefer the fullness of a 50/50 mix on an Ibby instead of soloing a pickup - but that's just me.

Here's a small bit of good news - wood glue is stronger than the wood itself. So if you can get glue in it, it will be quite stable. If you can't get glue in it, you can widen the crack first, however you'll need a different type of glue for that because Aliphatic glues are not fillers - they need the surfaces to be flush against each other. I've found that the Titebond people are great about responding to emails with questions on glue usage.

The QM stays in its case now after the 305 took the fall. I thought about gluing the crack, but I wasn't sure how it would hold or if it would affect anything. I don't care about the cosmetics, it's on the back anyway, since I think dings/scuffs/etc. add character. But I'll try what you said PDGood. Thanks for the advice!

A glue job by a competent repairman (or luthier) should be considered.

A friend offered me an Artist Alvarez acoustic guitar (for a supa low price) with a crack across the neck near the headstock. Yep, his toddler nephew laid it out, and stepped on it hard enough to crack it. It's now-barely noticeable if you're looking for it. A guitar teacher with the equip. made it into a nearly invisible repair.

While the Big Singles are extremely similar to the Big Splits, they do not sound exactly the same...and I would argue that the tone is "stellar". As it's been pointed out, every Fender Jazz bass on earth has single coil pickups. You get noise but you also get growl and more top end "air". In a mix any noise is completely gone. In a live situation any noise is completely irrelevant. I understand if they aren't your cup of tea but to think there is something "wrong" with them is silly. Ask Geddy Lee, Jaco, Marcus Miller, and on and on and on.

Got my 1405 today . Action from factory was pretty good but I set it up how I like it and it plays great . It's more orange than I thought it would be but I love the way it looks . Here's some pictures I took today .

I can only get good pictures outside and it only took me two minutes to take these . As you can see it's snowy and cold here in Iowa . Everything works on the bass , the only negative is I got quite a bit of hiss with the EQ bypass switch in the bypass position but not enough to worry about . Love the tone so far . I don't need a number but if I wasn't in so many clubs already I'd join this one too .
