I have that bass in Antique violin flat finish. Bought locally at samash on closeout and a 10% coupon. Tried to replace it with several other 5 string basses most much "higher end" but the Sr1005 is it for me. Not perfect but the best 5 string for me. My one bass that is never leaving me.

I'm getting all emotional... :crying:

I read a ton of articles and some say lemon oil and some say whatever they sell at the guitar store and some say this or that. I think any of them are better than nothing at all - the idea being that wood should not be allowed to get dry. You'll also find that it feels differently too (in a good way) when you play. :)
I bought my SRX3 with a dry fretboard and oiled it and it looks and feels so much better.

Exactly ;) I'm using the Dunlop 01 + 02 cleaner solutions and also occasionally (especially if the neck is dry all together, not just the fretboard) the Dunlop 65 Lemon Oil. The first two evaporate rather quickly with no residue whatsoever, while the lemon oil is a bit more greasy and requires some extra buffing & cleaning with a dry cloth. But they all work very well - at least to my eyes & hands.

I need help identifying this bass, if anyone can help...

Was originally stated to be a later 80s SR800, but I know they had 4 control knobs. I then thought it might be an SR1000, but still no. It's not a 300 or 400, because of the bridge type, the way the neck meets the body and the type of knobs on it I don't think came on lower models. My memory of models from back then isn't great.

My hunch is that the neck came off a black bass, but someone may know better.

Its says Made in Japan on the back of the headstock, but the sticker with the part number is gone. The serial number reads 8-A-4370, though the 8 may also be an "S".

I've tried google image searches, looking for old catalogs, nothing.

Kinda what I figured. It looks like the neck and bridge from a 1000 attached to 400 body - both older MIJs.

Not sure what to offer the guy as I don't think I'll be taking it apart before buying. Any idea what I could look for inside the wiring compartment to tip me off that the electronics are from a lower grade instrument?

If it plays well and sounds nice, I'd probably still buy it - just trying to establish value (and yes, I'm a contributing member).

Well..I owned an SR305 that I swear weight about 7 pounds..definitely no more than 8.5 pounds. I would laugh at how light it was. I'm sure something like a 505 would be extremely close in weight...the 506 I owned weighed maybe 9 pounds.
