Thats cool let me know how your goes and I'll do the same. Im trying to track down a buddy who replaces the nut on almost every guitar he has ever owned to a bone. Im not sweeting the intonation work been there done that.

Intonation is no problem to do, but I will let someone else replace the nut that has done it before. Ibanez basses have so much sustain anyway I don't think I'll switch to bone or brass - just keep it plastic. I actually prefer less sustain like the sound that Fenders have.

aproud1, that is the model. :) It's very similar to my 700 so there should be no surprises (fingers crossed, knocking on wood).

Yes, the 505 and 505M do sound different; the M one lacks a bit the "meatiness" of the 505, but is more aggressive in the upper mids freqs and the tone is overall brigther. And the necks feel completely different.

On a different note, that bass was a bit of a struggle, it required a number of minor tweaks - especially the nut: the original one made a string to buzz; the 2nd installed was worse. So in the end I replaced the stock nut with a Warwick JAN III - much to my surprise, they're exactly the same size: 45 mm. IMO it's a major improvement because on one hand the nut has adjustable height and on the other because it allows you to use a heavier set of strings without filling the nut. And maybe it's all in my head but I can hear a difference in the tone as well - it's a notch clearer & open (before it sounded a bit muffled, prolly because the nut was so tight that it chocked the strings), So it's a win-win situation :) I'm actually toying with the idea of replacing all the nuts of my Ibbys with a JAN. And it seems certain MEC pickups also fit the routing for the MK-1, so...hmmm :)

Whoooooah... really? Been thinking about replacing the nut on my beloved SR1005 which has been modded to hell and back. Sounds interesting. Where do you source the JAN III from?

Yeah, they like to come up with cool words to describe ordinary materials...maybe it's supposed to make the owner feel special for having a bass made from all those unheard of mats or smth ^^

Anyway, the nut is good and it works. Their tuning machines are quite good as well. And contrary to other ppl, I actually like the sound of their MEC electronics. These are parts that I have no problem using on any bass as long as they fit.

Had limited experiences with the MEC pickups. I tried a few different pre/pu combos in a Warwick to eventually come back to the MEC. Seem solid and quiet to me.

As far as tuners. The Gotoh sealed seem to be the standard. But I have to say the Lightweight fender tuners on my Jazz bass are very very nice. Much better than what they used to use. So much so that I can't bring myself to replace them. That is a first.


Back to SR's...

That 1300 is making me want to go back to the endless perfect SR on ebay which landed me my Blazer. That 1300 is seriously amazing!
