You've got a finish on that body, so it won't dry out. The fretboard is generally the only part of a bass that has no finish whatsoever.

Yeah, its a handful (literally) but I'm loving it, and once I get all the little issues fixed up, I'm seeing a long steamy relationship with this monster.
Hey SR peeps- imagine if ibby made a "roadworn" series of SR's. That's what I saw today@my local GC. Sr500,worn completely thru the finish to bare wood@the forearm cut&on the back@the ribcage cut. But the bare wood had a beautiful pinkish Patina. There are other Dingo&dents,+ a small chip gone from the lower horn. What always scared me off the 500's
was the softness of the finish,that dreaded "1st ding". I was smitten with this bass! It has Mojo! When I sat down&plugged in,the bass kinda melted into me. I've never been so comfortable holding any bass for the 1st time. It was like sleeping naked,or 10 yr old jeans ya know? Also the electronics worked flawlessly&intonation was perfect @ 12th and 24th frets. This bass has been loved. I've tried about 20 various SR's but never owned an active, I don't trust pre-amps. But this bass is only 199.00 & I think we were meant to be. Feedback? Are modern pre's

I love a good deal on a great sounding bass that also feels good and plays great. The finish doesn't matter one way or the other, but I wouldn't buy one that is road worn if the same thing were available at the same price that wasn't road worn.
All that said, the 500s are nice basses and sounds like you'll be really happy with that one. Price is hard to argue with.

I love you guys! Thanks for the encouragement. Gonna get it. (pd good-they had [email protected] cause it's pretty+a 505 for 349.00. I think this one is so cheap cause it's fugly,but so's my dog). Still don't totally trust actives but the trigger will be pulled!
Don't sweat the actives, my main basses are both over 10 years old and I haven't had any real problems with the preamps. You'll be ok.
