Well you did a great job. Dyeing the neck was a bit daunting. I think it came out OK. Once I get the headstock face painted it will be clear lacquer time. Hopefully it turns out as nice as yours.

I've been a way a while, do you have pics of the tinted neck? I thought I was the only one who had done it...

Awesome! Looks great.

I made a dark brown dye with some amber in it for a base, then sanded that back, then dyed with amber. I sprayed a couple of clear coats of lacquer next, applied my decal, then sprayed several costs of amber tinted lacquer until the decal was buried.

Very nice! I had some blotchiness and really black areas on my first attempt after sanding it down with 320, so I sanded it back with 220 and used water based sanding sealer before my second attempt. It is much more even. Not perfect, but I tend to be hypercritical. Looking forward to painting the headstock.

So, to cut it short, has anyone found a set of standard (not special order/limited) flats that fit the Mini P properly and intonate well?

lol, that's a tough one cause everyone on here has a favorite.
I prefer rounds and this D'Addario round wound short scale set 45-100 works great on it...IMO. I like this set also because it has no silk wrapping on it.

Oops, I missed the flats part of your post..For flats it seems like slim pickings if any for the Mini.

I sent an email to La Bella asking if they were planning any more string sets for the Mini the other day. Maybe if others do the same, it would show them that there is interest in another run.

I think they only made about 50 sets.

Maybe we could put together a letter of interest to send over to La Bella. A Google Doc that we can collect names and emails on expressing interest in another run of strings for the Mini. Just a thought!

it's not a hassle to order a custom set of rounds from newtone. you don't have to email them or deal with anything but the site. you just put in your preferences, and voila!

D’Addario short scale Chromes fit my mini just fine. There’s about a quarter turn of unbound E-string around the post, but absolutely no problems in use.

I've been using my Mini for rehearsals because I don't feel like lugging my fullsize P bass for 20+ minutes each way (even though it only weighs 3.5kg) and I have a mind of playing it on the gig just because the stage is so tiny. Also it's in a shady dive bar where there always drunk morons trying to get on stage.

BTW The Mini P is the perfect back up bass. Your main bass wets the bed --> pull the Mini P out your pocket and the gig goes on without a hiccup. Bonus: it sounds fantastic and it's instantly easier and more fun to play.

It's a win-win.

I do have one niggle: the fret markers are hard to see because they are not white and the strings are too close together and they cover them. The side dots are pretty useless too.

I've seen people on TB using stick-on fret markers they've bought - a possible solution for you?

I added Luminlay side dots to my Mini P. They do come in handy. I came across this install video some time ago and have ended up using this method to replace side dots on 6 basses now. Nice little easy project. I used this Pen/Hand drill from Amazon though.
