The Squier Mini Precision Bass Club

For some background, I just picked up a Fender Jr Bass after really falling in love with my Squier mini, but weirdly didn't get along with it in the same way. Left my wrist sore and at an odd angle which I never really remembered with the Squier.

Today for the fun of it I put them side-to-side and found out how drastically different the bodies are. The attached pic has the Fender on the top, with a way more steep curve than the Squier below. The Jr winds up putting your hand way at the back of the bass. Even the tummy-cut curve isn't really uniform, it starts shallow and goes wider. Weird stuff! Just to nerd out. I think I'm honestly going to move the Jr after realizing how much better the Squier is haha.

My tummy cuts on my Fenders are all wonky like that and different from each other.

Fender site says the Mini has narrow tall frets. Would most any crowning file designated as narrow work ?

Mine is from 2020 and it has medium jumbo frets. I'd use a medium file like the orange Hosco, think it's 2mm wide.
If you buy the z-file from StewMac, it works on every width. A 3 corner file with the edges sanded off will work even better even if it requires more elbow grease

Cool, I just went ahead and ordered a narrow and a medium Hosco.

Fender's posted specs tend to vary at times. Either way I'll be covered.

Eta: LaBella Mini P set on the way as well.

I am thinking of getting a Squier mini P-bass and want to set it up with piccolo EADG tuning as I have a p-bass currently set-up for piccolo tuning but want to return it to standard tuning.

Thanks in advance for feedback.

2 questions:
-Can the d'addario EXL280 piccolo strings be cut to fit and work?
-Would the 4 wound strings (24, 32, 42, 52) from this set work for piccolo tuning?

My wife wants to learn to play bass. We went to the local mega music store to check out instruments yesterday afternoon. Being as she is petite, we started by looking at short scale basses. She checked out a Squier Affinity Jaguar in charcoal mist but it was a bit too heavy for her. The 32" scale was just okay. Next, she tried a Mini Precision and it was the one. $220 with tax.

Last night, I only had time to lower the saddles, intonate the bridge, tighten the truss rod 1/4 turn and cut the nut slots a tad deeper. This is a great little bass! Strings measure 96-40 thou with my digital calipers.

I've only read the first 100 pages of this thread. The pickup can sound a bit strident on the thin strings. Suspecting the pickup has ceramic pickups, I tested the bass with a coil cord. The extra inductance made is sound smooth.

Her lessons will begin tonight and I'll teach her a few simple songs.

Are we saying that coiled instrument cables change the sound these days? Can the difference be heard in a blind audio test?

They always have. The shape probably has something to do with it. I don't know from inductance. The length at the very least. I use one for that reason on bass and single coil guitars because there's too much treble to begin with.

With a P90 and a clean tone it's not ideal because it sounds a bit dull but I don't use P90s and humbuckers for their clean tone. If I do it's cleanup from an overdriving amp or a fuzz and there's enough treble then.

Yes but can anyone tell the difference when they can’t see the cord, a proper test test means same length same gauge wire of course.

I use to make great mixing adjustments that I could totally hear only you notice later that I had the plug-in bypassed. Lol, but I could still hear the changes….

Whether anyone can hear the difference is beside the point.

I’ve always avoided them because I don’t like the weight and all the swinging around. I want that cord down and out of the way and not knocking anything over…. I’d love to here the difference though. I mean, I could just put one anywhere in the signal chain. Just plug one end into each side of the effects loop and maybe find the holy grail of P-tone !
