The tuners have always binded tight.on my year old mini. I thought it wouuld get better with repeated use but it hasn't. Short of replacing, is there a fix? If I do replace, what would you recommend? I lack the ability to get too fancy, I think I would be looking for a "drop in." Gotohs (4) would cost more than the bass did.
That is exactly what I use on my Mini P. The taper wraps around the E string post a little but no issues at all so far and I think for Nickel round wounds they are the best choice for the Mini. Plus they are reasonably priced and last.

That specific set is the only one I can find in stock locally. ( Short scale)
I've always been happy with D'Addario on my acoustic guitars.
All short scale strings work. Even flats like Chromes. Mine have been on my Mini P for 5 years now. Labella makes a set just for this bass BTW
You might try D'Addario XL EXL220S Super Light 40 60 75 95 (Amazon) To my touch the lighter E string feels much better and the other strings feel like they were made for the Mini.
Well the shop that had those only had one set and the package had been opened in the strings were taken out of the plastic envelope lol.
Only other set of short scale I can find in town is these..
Anyone tried them on a Mini ?
(Only reason I'm in such a hurry instead of ordering a set is because I've got a brand new amp and I want to hear it with fresh rounds)

I like DR strings for guitar. Their Tite Fit are great on Les Pauls because they add high-end. I like their Pure Blues for single-coils like Stratocasters. My Minis have spoiled me. All I've played for a couple of years.
I checked out quite a few 34" scale basses at a local shop yesterday. Man, they all felt like 50" scale lol. Felt like a total beginner. And all seemed like boat anchors.
The Bronco felt ok but that's not really what I wanted.
I suppose I'll just look at it as a blessing. All I need anyhow is a base with flats and one with rounds and my two Minis have that covered.
Might upgrade the stock tuners and p/ups down the road but I'm happy with them stock.

I've heard very good things about the GHS short scale balanced nickels.
I own a set, but they are going to be put on different short scale bass.
Just put a set of Ernie Ball Super Slinky on one of my Mini P's last night. 40-60-80-100
I also have two D'Addario sets to try. EXL 170S and EXL 220S
Anytime you take a set of dead rounds off and put a new set on they're going to sound better of course. But the Ernie balls really impressed me. Besides the sound, they feel smoother than the D'Addario set that was on it. Minimal string noise when sliding. (I assume the old set were D'Addario, they have the colored ball ends)
Some of the full winding is on the post of the E tuner but it's not an issue.
Another positive is after playing them about 10 minutes after I put them on last night and checking the tuning before I sat it on the stand, I checked it this morning when I got up and it was still tuned. Usually when I restring an instrument I just play them for a few minutes, retune and let them sit overnight to let the strings settle and it's a rare occasion the strings are not a bit flat. ( I don't stretch strings when I install them)
So yeah, they sound good, feel good, and fit the Mini just fine. We'll see how long they last, then try the D'Addario sets.

Nice! I just ordered a set of the shorty Ernie Ball 40-100's after reading your post. I will give them a try also. I just put a set of the D'Addarios on my Mini a couple of days ago but I want to try the Ernie Ball's. I'll do a quick swap and compare when I get them. I also conditioned my fretboard with this "Monty's Guitars - Instrument Food" that I recently received. Awesome stuff! I can only find it at Chicago Music Exchange website here in the states though. It is a little pricey but I think it will last forever. It works great as a conditioner. I usually use Music Nomad F1 oil but I am sticking with this from now on for all my fretboards.

Not sure I understand the question. I have a flight of basses to chose from if that is the meaning.
