Why haven't you signed up as a member of the Squier Precision Mini Club? With the beautiful work on yours you are certainly a committed MINI Musician. How does one order a set of Mini strings just like yours from Newtone?

I was waiting to join the club until I got my mods done! Sign me up!

On the Newtone website there’s an option to order custom strings. From there you can pick what gauges you want and what you want the winding length to be (I went with 30”, which seems to be perfect).

I think it was 28 GBP which is currently about $36. Took about 3 weeks for them to show up at my door, which I thought was pretty good.

I was going to make a bone nut for it, but decided to just use the stock one.

being a vegetarian, i used a corian nut we had on hand for another guitar or bass.

i got newtones for my 24.75" scale smallguitars MB2 - they're ridiculously better than the strings it came with.

Unfortunately no flatwounds ! - Apparently Pyramid can help with flats.

Could you divulge exactly what you ordered? I’ve been trying to follow the string discussion, and it is difficult. More options and choices than I know about. I only know that I wouldn’t mind a new set of strings.

i'm not Jackcrow, but i ordered the equivalent of extra lights - 40 to 94s.

I ordered the round core strings in gauges .102, .82, .62 and .42 with a 30” winding length. I believe they are called “Diamond Bass” on the website. Click on the “custom” option and you can input the specs.

What do the extra lights do for you? As I am still a beginner, I just pick it up and play it. I’m not experienced enough to understand the subtleties.

I have played bass since 1969, which was before they even told us the gauges of the strings on the package.

Back then, I used a micrometer to measure what they were.

IME, extra lights on a bass with that short of a scale are too light, and even on a regular short scale bass.

If it was MY money being spent, I would order something like .044 , .060 , .080 , .106 for such as bass, which coincidentally is the same as GHS Balanced Nickels in short scale.

On a long scale bass, going forward, I would choose more like .040 , .055 , .070 or .075 , .095 or .100 , though I currently have a 45-56-77-98 set of GHS Brite Flats on my Ric, identical to the Ground Round Wounds which I believe that GHS used to make for Dean Markley when I first discovered and began to use those.

there are no subtleties in my case, and if you can pick up the bass and play with no issues, you're fine.

i have wrist damage (from something unrelated), have had tendonitis and have arthritis in both hands, so it hurts my hand and fingers to play regular (light) strings for more than a few minutes but only hurts with extra lights if i play for many hours.

What you have chosen lets you get thru a whole gig, I would expect.

My hands are still OK, but my lower back has become weak.

In the process of beginning to look for lighter weight basses a couple of years ago, I encountered that fact that short scale basses more often weigh less, and I embraced both changes at once.

I still use the Ric sometimes, and its weight does not bother me as much because I now sit down to play, regardless of which bass I use.

it was torn rotator cuffs that got me to first try short scales because - as you say - they tend to be lighter. now almost all my basses are short scale - it turns out i like them. and i love my 32" scale mezzo, too, but even sitting down i have other issues that are often dealt with smaller body basses.
