i don't know how much pickguards cost but 35 pounds for a piece of plastic seems steep

the piece of plastic probably costs $18 to $22 U.S., but the person spending time making it has to make some money, too. these aren't cranked out by huge corporations. it takes my husband from around 1 1/2 up to 2 1/2 hours to cut out, shape and angle the edges of a pickguard.

So. The shelf liner should be arriving tomorrow or Wednesday. I was just thinking of how to do this. In my imagination, I just lay the sheet down with the sticky side up, smack the pickguard onto it, and carefully trim the excess. It sounds so simple. Is it really that simple? What am I overlooking?

I was also thinking of using a Sharpie on the bevel, to highlight the outline. However, I also use the bevel as a thumbrest, so I may end up smearing black ink everywhere. Maybe I'll skip the Sharpie part.

I know they are made by hand, I was just surprised to hear how much pickguard material costs. Sure enough, I checked local stores and the price is similar over here as well.

Depending on the design, I precut my sheet to be slightly larger than the pickguard (I wanted a particular part of the sheet, so it was a little more complicated, but only slightly), then laid the sheet on top of the pickguard, squeezing out the air bubbles as I pulled away the backing. Then I trimmed the excess with a brand new x-acto knife. Using a fresh blade was key in trimming out the screw holes etc.

oh and two things. By slightly larger I mean an inch or whatever. Nothing precise. And the fresh blade helps ride the bevel and make a clean cut. Just be careful not to cut into the pickguard. Ask me how I know.

Mine has arrive and it's not left my hands, all day. Pure joy. Light yet beefy and awesome. My full build will be: GHS Precision Flat shorts, Hipshot Kickass bridge (hoping for no shimming necessary, long adjust horizontals should help with intonation variables), DiMarzio Relentless pickups, a pickguard from Precision Guitar (once they are ready), nice black control knobs with cool pearl effect tops and Dunlop flushmount straplocks. Obvi will post up pics once done.

I soldered everything up, and ops check good. I need to practice soldering more, but I think it turned out ok. All the blobs are shiny.

Looks good, Do the regular size CTS pots fit ok in the control cavity? I was worried when I was redoing mine that regular CTS pots might be to tight of a fit so I went with the Noble mini pots for mine.

The pots fit fine. It's the little circuit boards that are a bit tight. But, they do fit. I hope the pickguard shows up in the next couple of days.

You should remove the foil from the pickups, otherwise they won't let the tonewood breathe

No, and no.

The sheet is 45cm x 2m, which isn't large enough for any of our windows, except the bathroom window, which is already covered with wavy/distorted glass.

It does, however, have a certain cheese-like quality that may work on my "soviet" 'product' shorty project (which still has a long way to go) ...

Someone told me the name on the headstock translates to 'product', which is a russian (discount?) store (chain?).
