The Squier Mini Precision Bass Club

While I'm waiting on my pickguard, I thought I'd try my hand at wiring the Nordstrands. Here's my setup?

Now what. Do I need the ground that was under the pu's on the OEM wiring? What to do with the wiring? I'm going to look at the Nordstrand website, and other references on the internet. I used the spring from the OEM pickups. I want to get it right the first time. Thanks for your help. :thumbsup:

I'm not sure what you mean.

In a P Bass, pickup polarity is irrelevant*. Assuming you just clipped the pickup leads, and all the other wiring is still hooked up, all you have to do is solder one lead from the pickup onto a snipped lead, then the other onto the other. Voilà! Done!

* A pickup produces AC, not DC. In a multi-pickup bass, "polarity" is only important for "phase" issues.

If by "the ground that was under the pu's" you mean the wire screwed into the body to ground the shielding: if it's still connected, leave it. I'm assuming your copper foil is grounded somewhere.

If you're putting in a complete new harness, solder as shown. Remember that swapping 250K/0.047uF with new 250K/0.047uF will not change anything on your sound.

That video is a paid advertisement, which is why he didn't do an A/B test. I imagine the stock pickup sucks compared to a good one, but how much does it suck, really?
Those of you who have changed the pickups, what improvements have you noticed.
Unless your original pickup is horribly bad, changing the pickup does not make a drastic change. A pickup change alone will not turn a clang machine into a deep roaring monster. Your strings, pickup placement, and playing style effect your sound much more. It's one of those "fine point" things.

I guess so. The Mini is my first Precision. I don't even have an amp! No way I'm replacing the pickups, they sound fine to me, but I've heard people say they sound weak compared to Fender pickups.

My Strat however doesnt sound Stratty enough. I suppose the cheap Mexican pickups in it are the culprits.

True.

And a Sprague 'orange drop' capacitor is NOT any better than another brand either, while we are busy debunking false narratives.

As long as it accurately exhibits the stated value [in this case .047 uf], it is fine, and the sound will be consistent from one cap to another.

Sprague IS a reputable brand [from before the days of electric guitars, BTW], but there are plenty of others.

One occasionally possible variance might be that if a new pot has a different resistance taper from the old pot, then how much you would need to turn the knob to produce a given change in output might be different from one to the other.

This could apply to a volume pot or to a tone pot

I'm not really doing any of this to change anything. I just want to learn how to do stuff like this. :)
