The Squier Mini Precision Bass Club

The E string on my Mini had a warbly sound. First I thought it was just a charming feature of the super short scale, then I tried lowering the pickup but the screw is stripped and it won't move anymore. Finally I decided to cut back the silk from the string at the bridge and bam! the string finally sounds normal. It's still weird above the 12th fret but I guess that's inevitable. The A and D are pretty close but they sound good.
Here's the bridge now (I also took the strap buttons from an old Japanese guitar):
I have another Precision coming (ahem...a big one) and I wonder now which flats to put on it. Which brands do not have the silk at the ball end?

Mine was the same way when I got it. I put new strings on it and it fixed the issue.
It's done (for now). Hipshot Kickass Bridge, GHS Precision Flats (short), green pearl knobs, Dunlop straplocks. Pretty happy with the sound, might like something 'hotter' eventually but for now it's pretty great. It is SO FUN. Got action and intonation pretty dialed in. No dead spots. Happy times.

The pickup wouldn't go lower under the E and finally the screw stripped and now it's stuck. It's ok but I wish it was a bit lower.
Really the soft screws have to be the most frustrating thing about cheap gear. I dread the day I have to take the neck off.
I hear you. I, too, have seen soft metal screws on a few different low end basses.
Good news is it is an easy fix.
I have found, too, that my cheap screw drivers do not help the matter. It really needs to be a solid screwdriver that fits well. Otherwise, it makes it more likely the screw will strip.
same thing here, but it was fixed by altering the pickup height. my pickup was much higher on one side than the other - so high on the one side that if i played hard, the magnet attracted the string.

I had to make a trip across the Pond from London to Florida 10 days ago to take care of dear old mum who isn't doing well. Looks like I'm here for an extended period of time....which got me looking at cheap basses so I can continue to record with my band (virtually) and get ready for some dates we have in the books for 2021. I was thinking of a Mustang or something similar.
Then saw this mini P, which I thought deserved a punt as I can easily take the neck off and get it in my luggage when I head back to the UK.
Wasn't I amazed when I saw that the Guitar Center 2 miles from mums house had one in stock. Walked in today and saw it was going for $149.99. Bonus!
Haven't had much time with it, but plugged my mini Vox headphone amp into the jack and WOW, what a great little bass! Perfect for keeping my chops up. Stock strings are ok. I love the 28.6" scale....so much, I'm wondering how much the band will laugh at me if I use a bass of this size!
In the age of COVID, I'm sure most haven't played out or even jammed....but has anyone played one of these with a band? As stock? I'm thinking it's worthy of a wiring harness, string and pickup mod?

Mine came off without problems. Just make sure your screwdriver fully engages the screw heads and you'll be fine.
I brought my Mini P (stock except for strings) to band practice. It sounded like a P should, and was well received.
Strings are Ibanez Mikro brand, except for the G, which is a Stagg .045 nickel roundwound. My pickup, tuners, and wiring are fine as is.
I played a mini set (how fitting) with electric guitar and vocals.
The only mod was I'd already put flats on it. I played through a pretty bad 25W Ampeg combo. It was great, even though the top two strings just vanished in the mix because of the amp.
I have no idea how bad the stock pickup is but the Mini sounds much better than my Harley Benton Jazz bass knockoff in Precision mode (neck pickup only) with the stock Wilkinson pickups. Not much of a benchmark, I know.
Thoroughly impressed with the little dude, although the low E still sounds a bit funky, like it's out of tune with itself. Might be a dud string though, compliments of D'Addario.
So, from reading only half this thread, it seems Mikro strings work? But not really interested in round wound. Also seems d'Addario Chrome short scales work....but you have to deal with string wrap on the E tuner? (not a big deal as I've had basses where I've had that happen before).

Apparently it is a 2006, and looks the same as a Squier Mini-P to me.
Same specs in scale length and nut width, and same light weight.
The owner does not mention the strings going thru the body, but in the pics, I can see that they do [which should make for more choices of short scale strings which fit properly at the tuners], and that seems to be the only difference, other than the price point and country of manufacture [Mexico].
I almost get the feeling that the strings could anchor to the bridge, though there would be pros and cons to trying that, even if it's possible.
Oh yes, one more difference - it has no tone control.

This is not our Mini P, but it Is a Squier, and since we have lots of pickguard talk here, I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this.

Short scale Chromes are fine. The E wraps around the post for 1/4 of a turn but it doesn't look like it'll snap soon. The biggest issue is the silk at the ball end coming up on the saddles but that depends on how your bass intonates.
Yep, that's the Mini's very rare dad. Probably a much better bass since it was made in Mexico and it cost as much as full size basses back then. It has a rosewood fretboard and an alder body. The pickup is probably the same one they mounted on the Standards back then. The tuners seem akin to that of the Mini. String through body means short scale strings will fit better but I still see the E doing a 1/4 turn on the peg. I guess Labella strings for Mustangs fit it perfectly. Vulfpeck's Jack Stratton has oen with Labella's that Joe Dart uses in a bunch of their videos.
