The Squier Mini Precision Bass Club

The pots might be touching the sides of the control cavity..Happened to me before with an old bass with the cavity shielded...not sure if thats the issue for you though.

You are correct. I wrapped some electrical tape around the sides of the pots, and the problem went away.

I think that might vary. My wiring/solder joints appeared robust when I had it open. Rosin spatters told me mine was hand soldered. I think mine was an early run. If all the harnesses are hand soldered, there could be a wide range of fragile to robust harnesses out there. View attachment 4067257

That being said, I think the most likely cause of @G19Tony's issue is, indeed, a short circuit. Since the pickup is responsive when the pickguard is loose, it's not a broken joint. Something is causing a ground short when it's tightened, most likely a bare portion of a "hot" lead to the shielding ground.

It's a P Bass circuit. There's not many culprits to examine.

It was a problem with the pots touching the sides of the shielded cavity. I put in a new, prewired harness from 920D Customs. 920D Custom I bought full size pots, and I believe that to be the issue. I wrapped electrical tape around the pots, and the issue went away.

I'll run this until I start having issues, then I'll get mini pots, and rewire the whole thing myself. :)

Was it you who said that they had switched to full sized pots instead of mini ones ?

If yes, then something might be touching, where with the originals it would not be.

EDIT : Yes, my memory did not fail me ! :hyper:

Glad to read that you cured it.

Got my Holiday 2020 issue of bass player today. They had a full review our beloved Mini.
Their reviewer Joel McIver talked ab out "insubstantial" feel, with a lightweight feel to details like tuning machines but plugged in and played did sound like an unex;pected secret weapon. And that weapon is the C profile neck. amazingly playable for the price. Smooth and welcoming. nicest chunk of maple at this price seen for awhile more tro come

more on the bass player review: Other than neck the Mini is just adequate, though at this preice still a good value. Tones don't compare to a full size P Bass but not feeble with a certain amount of bottom end and lesser on top--fixable with a good pedal or preamp. Overall an acceptable instrument with a better than average neck. bp rating: PLUS-Portable affordable fun MINUS Hardware feels insubstantial. For the price a great way into a Fender Build quality 7/10, Sound Quality7/10 , Value 10/10 A good small instrument recommended w/ caveat that it requires a slightly different mindset and an adapted technique. But good enough that if you play one for awhile a full size bass may be cumbersome What do you guys think?

I got the neck on, and strung up. Sadly, any metal that I touch on the instrument, causes the amp to buzz. I may take it to a friend of mine who owns a shop. I'm sure it's something simple. I'll be checking Dr. Google. :bookworm:

At least it LOOKS purty.

Is the signal also present, or no signal and only hum ?

Rough crowd. ;)

Here you go.

Happy Thanksgiving to all here who celebrate.

So how was the fit and finish? It looked like the first one was not a direct drop-in replacement with perfect fit (and needed a bit of work around the neck pocket). Was the fit good and tight, with smooth edges? Did all of the screw holes line up and was the fit tight around the neck pocket.....without any additional mods or work?

What makes you note the area around the neck pocket?

Fit and finish was very good. It was tight, and I just did the slightest bit of sanding with a sanding pad from the back - around the pickup outline. Otherwise, both popped in, and, the screw holes were lined up perfectly.

I had to remove a little material around the neck pocket. Other than that, everything lined up perfectly. You can see where it overhangs the pocket a little.

There is signal.

Do the volume and tone controls have the proper influence on the character of the signal, and when the volume is turned off all the way, can you still get the hum ?

And this was a prewired control and jack assembly as you received it, so only needed to hook the pickup to it ?

I think you posted a pic of that, but I'm being lazy right now, not looking for it.

That is correct. The volume and tone work as they should. It was a pre wired harness.

If I remember correctly, I ended up attaching the extra grey wire coming off the Power Blade pickup to the screw with the other ground and then I attached the other end of the original ground and the bridge ground to the input jack...I think ;)

Maybe one or another of those grounds has been attached to the wrong terminal of the jack ?

So when you touch some metal part which ought to to be grounded, you might actually be indirectly touching the live side of the jack, injecting hum along with the signal.

See ? - The coffee helps. :hyper:
