He's a quirky guy in real life and brings a lot of that into the character. He gets more subdued and matures as the show goes on. And it was the nineties.

Like ALL Star treks, they will get better.. I found my favorite characters were Quark, Odo and Jadzia
Last week I watched a bunch of TNG episodes from the 1st season. There were a few decent ones, but most of them were just awful. Worse than I remember.
"The Naked Now", (Episode 3, the one immediately following the 2 part pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint") was where all the crew members, including Data, got intoxicated with some space virus. Data and Tasha Yar slept together and Wesley acted like an idiot. The plot was intentionally copied from a TOS episode ("The Naked Time").
The scene where Tasha seduces Data is cringe inducing.
The actors seemed to have been given some odd directions on how to act space drunk. There was a lot of smiling and head wobbling.

Star Trek Rumor Central is reporting that Paramount/CBS/Viacom wants to get Will Smith to play a Starfleet captain.
Paramount Reportedly Eyeing Will Smith For Big Star Trek Role
According to our intel – which comes from the same sources that told us Captain Pike would be getting his own spinoff long before Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was announced – the studio are keen to recruit Will Smith to play a Starfleet captain. Although, at this time, it isn’t yet clear exactly what movie they’re eying him for.
After all, the canonical Star Trek 4 and Noah Hawley’s unrelated take on the material are both still rooted firmly in development hell, and Paramount could realistically end up making none or both of those sci-fi blockbusters. Still, with Robert Downey Jr. and Brie Larson both having found themselves linked to Star Trek recently as well, it would certainly appear that the studio are actively seeking an injection of star power to ensure that the next installment in the franchise can make it into production sooner rather than later.

For some reason, when I saw “Will Smith,” my brain read, “Will Wheaton”... 
Wise cracking, charming Will Smith would be awful, but he'd never play it that way. He'd be dour. The fate of the galaxy would be at stake and only Captain Will Smith can save the day because (insert generic cliche reason here). He's retired because (reason) and his former first officer comes to his cabin where Captain Will is chopping wood. "I'm retired Sam. Tell Admiral Barclay (wink wink audience), the answer is no." Suddenly, the skies darken and ten billion tiny drone ships drop out of warp.....and so on. Screaming. Splosions.

The JJ franchise didn't fail because of a lack of big name actors. It failed because it was the same movie three times. You have space ships. There are so many good stories to tell. They need stories, not A list celebrities.
I had an idea for a movie where Kevin Pollock & Jason Alexander both play men who are under they delusion they are Captain Kirk, not William Shatner, but Captain Kirk.
One day they meet & they both think the other is an evil imposter & they set out to eliminate or capture the other--hilarity, hijinks & adventure ensues.
And then someone unseen is trying to kill them, and they work together to find out who.
In the final scene they both get shot by a sniper and as the camera zooms out on a nearby rooftop we see William Shatner putting away a sniper rifle and smiling.
it wouldn't work as well now.
But it would have been a fun movie.
this is time & date stamped--so if anybody steals it--I have proof.
But I'd probably go see that movie.
