Hello Status Club peeps! I'm veering dangerously close to ordering a Status, and was wondering if anyone could comment on the sound of an 'all-graphite' Status (ie. Streamline, etc) as compared to an Aluminum-necked bass. I really really love the sound of Aluminum: I have a Kramer, a Vacarro, and two Hartke basses.
But none of those are Medium Scale, and I know that medium scale is available in some Status models (via the BendWell option). Lately I've become a medium-scale junkie, and would let go of all my Aluminum-necked basses if the Status was comparable in sustain and brightness. I used to have an "Emerald" all-graphite acoustic 12-string, and I recently dug up some old recordings and was seriously impressed with its sustain and chime...
Any Status owners here also have Aluminum neck basses and can offer a comparison? I figured that it wouldn't hurt to ask!

Never *owned* an aluminium-necked instrument, though I've played Travis Bean and Kramer aluminium-necked guitars.
Graphite is something like 4x more rigid than aluminium *per unit weight*, but of course graphite necks are deliberately made a lot lighter than aluminium necks. I am highly confident that a monocoque graphite design like a Status Streamline or Stealth will have comparable sustain to any aluminium-necked instrument you have, particularly if it's a bolt-on aluminium neck. I have one of each and they ring out magnificently and forever. And, very much the opposite of a metal neck, they are INSANELY stable in the face of temperature change.
That having been said, the overall sound you get will be much more a function of the strings, the design and placement of pickups, and the way the instrument is played, than a function of the neck material.

That looks like it might have the same pickups and preamp as my early 90s T-bass. Is the middle position single-coil a hum-cancelling dummy?

It's got to be the exact same electronics package as my Trace Elliot branded T-Bass back on page 17, although mine has the dummy coil hidden under the pickguard. It's a great bass!
Hmm... With a recent change to my financial situation, I might have finally arrived at the point where I can buy the Status bass I always wanted, which is very exciting! I probably wouldn't be placing an order until the end of the year, so I have plenty of time to agonise over the specifics of the build.
With that in mind, do any of you fine folks own any combination of all-graphite Stealths and wooden bodied S2/S3s?
I know I'm more or less set on a headless 5-string with a high C and numeral inlays, but the model/construction is something I'm still debating with myself on. Since I'm almost certainly going for a solid colour finish (never been much of a fancy wood guy), is there any advantage to going with an S2/S3 that involves wood in the construction of the body over an all-graphite Stealth?
I'm drifting towards Stealth electronics (with a couple of possible variations) for the bass anyway, so it seems like that might be my best option all around. Would the all-graphite body make the bass heavier or lighter, do you think?
I have owned (all 5 strings) neck through headed and headless S2's, a headed stealth and currently have 3 headless S3's with different pickups and preamps (also had 3 different 5 and 6 string Empathies, a bolt on S2 and a Streamline).
The S3's are my favourites. I prefer the arch top design and the overall balance on the strap. The S2's are as good in every way, the S3 is just my preference.
The stealth has a light body which is nice in a long gig although it feels a bit odd at first. The tone of the Stealth was more forward and aggressive to my ear and I preferred the warmer sounds of the Empathy, S2's and S3's.
I only have the S3's now. All the others were sold so I could try other makes of instrument.
Looking back I realize that they are all excellent and I could have just kept one and saved the trouble of buying and selling all those basses. But that isn't how GAS works.

I have ten basses right now but I need to 'thin the herd' for moving next year. And the best way to thin the herd is to buy a new one, right? I'm hoping this Streamline will replace at least six of them (after all, with double-ball-end its pretty quick to change the strings from rounds to flats to tapes...) Plus, it's very portable! ("Travel light", that's my motto...)

Love the ease of the double ball strings for that reason, change tones in 2 minutes.

Did anyone else catch this? Rob is now offering his replacement necks with a "natural" (i.e. faux maple) fretboard. Even has a block version to boot. I don't know if I totally dig the aesthetic with the headstock and nut still being black, but it's still a cool option for a project where the totally black fretboard doesn't work.
I'm really curious as to how those look in person. They kind of remind me of that old fashioned beige plastic/bakelite you used to see on everything, but I have a sneaking suspicion that's just the lighting in those specific pictures.
Can you (anyone) help me to identify my Status? Please. Can't locate a serial number.

This is my S2 Classic Status Bass 5 string.
but i have 3band eq.
it looks very similar to yours
could be also a status matrix bass. a model from the 90ties.
The typical status matrix model was this here. i got the same. it has has three switches, but one of them is actually two switches (active control and bass)
but you can write to status graphite. they answer if you send them a picture. if you want to be sure.
