The stoner/doom bassists thread...

i have two basses, both 5er's tuned to A, E, A, D, G. i like it. my guitarist still uses standard tuning. for what it is worth Cult of the Lost Cause (shameless plug) are doing more of a post-rock/metal type thing... the Low A is all doom though. I usually use a p5 (passive) with flats also using flats, so it's heavy on the fundamental.

I've owned a couple 5 string basses with the intent to become just as comfortable on a 5 as I am on a 4, and my SRX695DX was quite good for adjusting to a 5 string, but in the end I realized at heart I'm a 4 string player and that's all I really want to play. If I come across something where I have to tune to B or lower, I'll just use a 5 string pack on a 4 string.

I don't know how doomy/stoner you consider Torche, but nothing sounds like the bomb sounding chords Steve plays. I don't know what tuning he's in but I think it's A.

For older stuff, it was standard, but with a low A in place of the low E so...

AADGBE

Hence all the octave sounds...and for the bomb note/drop z/whatever, they lose the high E, move everything down, and have another low string tuned down to slack...

ZAADGB

Their bass player is tuned standard, using the A string in the same octave as the guitars, and then dropping the low E to slack for the bomb note songs.

I use the bomb note for Mors in our song 'Slag'... ZF#BE (tuned down from drop B).

Z? What on Earth are you guys talking about.

Talking about the bomb note you hear on some Torche and Floor songs, which is literally the lowest string tuned down till it's all slack. Not really a name for it and it's not really tuned to a specific note, just tuned down until it sounds like bombs are being dropped every time you hit it, so most of the time people just use "z" to name the string.
