@lomo covered this pretty well already, running the controls at 4-5-0 is about as close as you'll get, but you'll never completely get around the mid scoop. Interestingly the EQ on Elementary and Dr. Wattson is exactly the same, but the last stage of Elementary comes after the EQ, so it does a little more shaping afterward that makes it sound and feel a little different.

On a semi-related note I finally got the revised boards in for Detective and have been doing some testing, and man that red channel is a winner. Both channels are great and I love the flexibility of having both, but when that red channel kicked in it gave me some feelings.

I'm still waiting on the new batch of enclosures, but I hope to have Detective available for ordering in the next week or two. Dreamcatcher needed a couple more tweaks, but what is hopefully the final revision of the board will be here for testing in about a week.


As noted above either one will work and it's going to come down to preference. My personal taste is that I like the way Elementary drives a little better than Underground Accelerator. Elementary has a hotter first stage so it feels a little more aggressive and bitey, whereas Underground Accelerator is a little more smooth. That being said it can also depend on what I'm playing. When I play my passive jazz bass I like the way it feels with the Underground Accelerator, but when I play my active Ibanez SR I think the bite of the Elementary lends itself better to a nice modern grind.

So short answer, you should probably get both just to be safe.

Thought about it for a few days and pulled the trigger on an Elementary.

Thanks :) Every now and then I throw something together that makes me say "oh yeah, that's cool." And it's always pleasant when those ideas carry over well to the enclosure prints.

This looks cool, I've been looking for a delay. A few things I usually look for on my hunt for delays that I'm curious how this will handle:
  • Can we dial out the lows on the repeats to keep out the mud?
  • Different subdivisions? Quarter/Eighth/Dotted Eighth/Triplett
  • Tap tempo??
My guess is that Rate/Depth is for a chorus-like modulation on the repeats?

You're correct on the rate/depth controls, it's for modulation on the repeats. The goal of this pedal was basically to make a Deluxe Memory Man workalike with a tube.

I actually tried to get a tap tempo into this one, but I wasn't able to make it work and the way I implemented it affected the audio quality, so that's a no-go.

Yeah I'm sure I'll get something up eventually. You touched on the main reason I'm not in a hurry to make a commercially available delay though. I stand by what I make and I think the overall tone of this thing is absolute top notch, but there's absolutely no way for me to compete with the options available in the delays available today from the likes of Strymon, Chase Bliss etc, not to mention the delays that are available in the modelers of today. Just a basic tube delay like this one here would have to be relatively expensive if I were to sell it, and it wouldn't be the best bang-for-your-buck delay at any price I would put on it.

I will continue to make stuff that I think is neat because I want it for myself, and I plan to continue to bring out great preamps and D.I.s, but I'm starting to accept that I can't always be better than everyone at everything under the sun.

Always putting in a request here for the Single Slice. That will ultimately be something you will be better at than most other tube compressor builders out there. If you do decide to do it.

Having said that, I'm looking forward to your new preamps and D.I.s coming out the rest of this year and throughout 2025.

I actually was wondering if the Delay could almost be a Single Slice in disguise. Turn the delay and feedback down low and you might be able to coax a nice delay out of it. Or some sort of switch that turns the delay on/off and just does the modulation on the dry signal. A combo delay/chorus pedal might be worth the price of admission.

Would there be anyway to add a HPF a la Neptunium/Venus to the repeats? I'm assuming you already investigated, but never hurts to ask.

You say you can’t compete. I say I have a unique pedal with the neptunium and that the companies can’t complete with that.

Who else has a Noble clone out that sounds as good as the neptunium for the same price?

Single Slice is still happening, I have an industry professional all lined up to test my prototype and he has been waiting for a couple months now for me to actually throw it in a box and ship it to him. I feel good about the new prototype, I just need someone else to tell me they feel good about it too.

That is wonderful to hear. I (and many others, I'm sure) have been excited since you first talked about the Single Slice design. What was that, last year?

With everything else you have planned, Nathan, I hope that more progress can happen on Single Slice soon.
