I was hoping to get everything done all at once last night, but the missus and I were both up until 2AM boxing up 49 backorders and there are still a dozen to go, so I haven't had time to sit down and get Steddi Go organized for the site.

I went to place a circuit board order for a new project today and was greeted with this. I've done everything I can to keep my prices low amidst rising costs, usually by simply letting my profit margins slip, but there is absolutely no way I will be able to operate as usual if this is the way things are going to be.

I do not feel liberated.

In Australia it would be un-ossie not to put sh!t on a politician, or your boss, or your mate, heck we just dump on anyone.
It's when someone don't put sh!t on you that you realize that you are not worth the effort as far as they are concerned.

US supplier has always been an option, but they've always been 3-5x the cost. This still gets tricky because even if I were to find a US supplier for the raw circuit boards and the assembly labor, the majority of the components on my board do not have US manufacturer alternatives, so there will still be a tariff on those when the US supplier purchases them, and that cost will of course get passed on to me. So I would expect US suppliers to still be 3-5x this price, if not even more.

Thinking about this makes me feel physically ill, so I'm not going to make any decisions right now, but this is a big enough deal that I will have to make some decisions, it's not something I can just ignore.

I recall a worry in the JPTR-FX thread, about US imports of pedals make by them in Germany - but in the end, it wasn't an issue as the US has an $800 "de minimis" threshold, so that any goods being imported under that value are tax/duty exempt. Has that been abandoned now - or is that source country specific?

(the 'de minimus' for importing into the UK is £135 - which can be a killer for some things).

It will be hard to keep up with what countries you can order from that don't have those misguided charges applied to them.
Can the US even build cars now without using mainly Chinese parts ? I don't mean just the part makers like tail light lenses but the raw materials the US manufacturers need to make the US parts from, they might make the plastic lenses in the US but the raw materials most likely comes from Asia somewhere.
I can imagine the massive price rise in goods if everything you need to import has a massive tariff applied to it.
I read about an Ozzie company that sells some of its swimming costumes in the US, because the material is imported from China the US is going to place a massive tariff on the bikinis that the AU company sells in the US.
Goods in the US are either going to triple in price or no longer be sold there, it's going to be a hard 4 years.

Bummer. Not sure how much you‘ve looked into domestic options but honestly they are a dime a dozen these days and should not drive up costs nearly to what you’re showing in your punchout via tariffs.

The raw components on the other hand… there will be no free lunch.

I'm so sorry Nathan, this is just terrible.
I am dealing with much of the same reality in my line of work, and i am really worried for my industry as well.
(we've actually paused all imports from China temporarily, due to the high tariff rates, and uncertain conditions moving forward).

It's like trying to solder a circuit board with a sledge hammer....

These new tariff conditions are truly unsustainable.

Well since I don't know when these boards are going to get ordered, no sense sitting on a secret. This is what I was trying to order. It's called "THE WATT", and as its name implies was commissioned as a custom build for Mike Watt as a touring rig so he wouldn't have to bring a full pedalboard. Mike is a fan of the Finally and the Single Slice, so he asked if I could throw together a sexy little box that has Variable HPF -> Compressor -> Tube preamp -> D.I. and this is what I came up with. Hopefully you'll get to see it one day.

Is Taiwan an option at the moment ?
I usually get my PCB's from JLCPCB and they assemble as well, I would hope that Taiwan has a lower tariff since they are of such important military partner with the US.
I think Taiwan makes most of the semiconductors as well so if they cop a massive tariff it would be like shooting yourself in the foot for any US manufacturer.
I think the only thing in a modern kitchen that does not have a CPU in it is the kitchen sink these days, and I'm sure someone will have a prototype of that already in the lab.

I know watt plays bergantinos, will the eq section be like the forteé’s? That would make it extra exciting. I love their EQ.

Actually no EQ on this one. Basically the choices were variable HPF or EQ, and he said variable HPF was more useful to him. I could have done both, but it would have needed to go to a bigger box at that point, and neither of us wanted that.
