The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

My Neptunium arrived, and the first thing I did was start playing around was the HPF switch. With the bass/trebel knobs at zero, I immediately hated the sound. Made my bass sound like a damn guitar! Then I turned the bass knob up and at about 10 o'clock all of the bass tone was back but without the excessive boom.

I'm curious how it works in more of a performance setting, but for trying it out at home, the HPF plus some bass boost lets me play a bit louder, keep the bass tone, but not vibrate the nails out of the studs. This is fun.
The day I learned this was the day everything changed for me.
It works beautifully in a band setting.

I believe that would be creating resonant boost at your cut frequency, which as you notice is a very full sound without rattling the dishes off the china cabinet.

Obviously Nathan designed the HPF pedals with tone controls to sound great with the bass control boosted when the HPF is engaged.
Yeah as noted Neptunium is obviously not an original design, but when I designed Venus Z and Grand Slampegg (which use the same HPF) I played with where in the circuit to put the HPF to make sure it would get the effect that I wanted, which I assume is what Jack did with the Noble design. There are a handful of places it can go, and each one will make it behave a little differently.

So what would happen if you used something like a Thumpinator, and then into a Neptunium with the HPF on. Too much HPF?
I don't remember offhand what the rolloff frequency or rate was on the thumpinator, but too much is going to depend entirely on the situation and the rest of the rig. If you have a preamp with a really boomy shelving bass control EQ, you would still probably be able to find some good settings.

@Sushi Box FX now that darkglass ALSO has released an expensive multieffects pedal, when are you going to do the MultiSushi pedal?

Call it the Bento Box!
Probably not until Gondwana has happened. If I do something big and fancy and expensive, I would feel like a loser if it didn't have IR loader capabilities.

As Nathan said, it depends on the roll off frequency,
I use a passive HPF first in line on my board, but, it is fixed at 30hz to cut the ultra lows before they hit my pedals, I find it helps with tracking on octaves and filters etc.
Then I have a variable HPF on Mesa D800+ to do adjustments for the room/sound etc.
I doubt i will be using HPF at all on the Neptunium when I get it.

No not too much HPF. Pretty hard to have too much HPF. Thumpinator was on my board for years it has a steep cut off at 25hz. Having a few pedals with HPF doesn't do anything bodacious to the sound, all it does is cut out the low end. Same with LPF cutting out the treble (or tone control on bass)

Haven't had a chance to try but Nathan's adjustable HPF control is most certainly the way to go! Replaced my thumpinator with a ZIO, that works similiarly to Nathans adjustable HPF and a pultec EQ. a Tube pultec DI pedal?? hmmm :D

An HPF isn't a dead shelf off, it's sloped - I've seen it written as dB per octave. So two HPFs would drop the bass off much more aggressively. However, how noticeable this is, is something else. And as the level (dB) is logarithmic - as is frequency/octave change - I don't think it's going to help me try to work out what it may sound like without trying it :woot:

Be aware that a HPF is -3dB at cut off frequency, then some sort of XdB/Oct drop off, but it does mean that if you got 2 HPF set at say 40Hz you will have a drop off at 40Hz of -6dB, regardless of how steep the following slopes are.

But those slopes are additive, which means a HPF with a 12dB/Oct + one with a 12dB/Oct = a HPF with a 24dB/Oct slope, but as said, if both are said if both are set at the same frequency it will mean -6dB at the cut off frequency, instead of just -3dB.

Boosting a Low Sehlf Filter at the same frequency as the cut off frequency of a following HPF can if set right give you real meaty punchy low end, but without it getting muddy or boomy, that's what I do.

Just stopping in gush about the Greenhouse again. I've seen questions about how it compares to the More. Honestly, I like the Greenhouse better! Bouncy, warm.
Thanx for the feedback ! would you say that it saturates "earlier" than More ?

@Sushi Box FX , to reiterate (sorry with all the questions !),
Could you explain me the advantage of having things, such as Capo, in a GREENHOUSE loop, instead of having just MORE before or after ?
and also: did you try it with an 12AY or 12AU tubes ?

Nothing adverse happens.
I personally run a Broughton BBA at the beginning of my my chain (24 db/octave @ 25hz) and a variable HPF at the end (12 db/octave @ 80-125hz), then boost bass downstream on my amp.

I don't have a More so I couldn't tell you but if memory serves me right More doesn't breakup. If push the Greenhouse really hard there is breakup. Which I never tried until now... and now... I am rethingking my signal chain because damn it sounds good

No I am using the recommended 12AT tube
