The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on either a Westinghouse or a Space Heater for April. They both seem to fit the bill of adding some tubey character to my sound.

I love my AG-700- I just want to add some tubiness sometimes! Or maybe a lot of tubiness othertimes!

I'm thinking the SVT (if I ever get it finished) is going to be another $300 build. It has over 100 components, the layout is taking forever, which means it's going to take a while to build. It better be freaking cool or I'm going to be upset :p
Well, as you can see by the current classifieds, a SVP-PRO on the high side, is 200 more than that, and we all know how much the head can be, so 300 doesn't sound so painful. If its legit, which I'm sure it will be, then I would consider that a bargain (heck, even some of the SV emulators are more than that, yours comes with real toobz!)

A tube SVT pedal is one of a kind. It’s worth every dollar, IMO.

I don't understand why folks are just now realizing this, from my experience tubes have always been more linear. Everyone is so eager to emulate, because "valves are so unreliable?", I don't get it. Maybe they don't want a pile of 300 volt pedals lying around lol

I feel like cost and power are more of an issue than reliability. I'm sure everyone knows you can't run a Sushi Box pedal on a standard Boss adapter, you need something beefier, which is why a lot of tube pedals have their own power supply (Blackstar uses a 19V adapter with theirs?) which a lot of people (myself included) don't like. Also aside from the cost of parts, which is not trivial, for a company to design a tube pedal they need an engineer/team of engineers comfortable enough to design a good product, and engineer labor is not cheap, so the company has to recoup the cost of development in the price of the pedal.

So how do I do it? 1) undervalue my labor. I generally don't even consider the time spent in development in the cost of a pedal, just cost of parts + time to build. When I value my time spent building I charge between 1/2 and 1/3 of what I make at my day job. 2) low overhead. I have a good day job, pedals aren't what pays the bills (though in the past few months you guys have paid off my wife's car and all of our credit card debt, so thanks for that :) ).

good point. As everyone here knows (bc I can’t shut up about it) I just got my first sushi yesterday. LU Mini tube. I didn’t get a whole lot of time with it last night and I will post full thoughts when I do, But I was immediately struck by how freaking good it sounded. Simple to dial-in. Clean and sweet, a bit of grit, no problem. Every knob reacts in a way that you would expect. Actually hard to dial-in bad sounds. I have some other non-tube preamp pedals that I like But those take a lot more Dialing in and I’m usually less sure of the results. With this it was just plug it in, twist a few knobs, and oh yeah- immediately a tone That sounded great…

Yeah most good power supplies can double ports for x2 Volts, x2 Amps and run up to 24v, I'm guessing (and hoping) those are good enough. My comment wasn't limited to pedals though, some of these larger (not going to bring up the name) pedals and sister rack models try so hard to be like a tube, they have made some nice things, but replacing the valve wasn't one of them. Close, but no cigar - I know when they've sold the idea of using their tech verse valve, one of the listed "cons" for valves was reliability, and from my limited knowledge, only power tubes are really culprits in that respect. Glad to hear you're at least making something, don't sell your self short!

Exactly the loop I'm caught in at the moment as well. I guess in the grand scheme of world problems, this is a pretty good one to have. lol

Totally with you there! I got my London underground mini tube yesterday and I like it a lot. Like a lot a lot. I have a Westinghouse on order next month too. But now I also want an X series preamp. And man, the space heater clips sound great. And there’s at least a couple projects in development that I’m excited about… I’m gonna need a second job LOL

I know the commute wouldn't be great, but if you people don't slow down with your buying I'll be hiring :P

Blackstar's HT pedals now use a 22V DC/1.1A adapter. Folks had a bit of trouble with the earlier 19V units.

There's no problem finding robust 9 or 12 volt power supplies; 18 and 24 volt supplies are a bit scarcer, but doable.

Interesting, I don't get it. For a tube that uses either a 6.3V or 12.6V heater I don't understand the choice of a 19V or 22V supply. I actually owned the HT Drive for a bit, I liked the sound and particularly the speaker emulated output, but the distortion and metal versions were underwhelming
