Been dialing in my PAX this weekend. Slampegg X coming. I am really looking forward to it.

Weird question on the B15: Has anyone tried a lower mu tube in the Slampegg X to get closer to the B15 tone? 12AX7 has a high mu of 100, but the original B15 used a 6SL7 in the preamp which has a mu of 70. The mini tube Slampegg is great because 6N21B has a mu of 75, but I'm curious if anyone has tried out a 12AT7, which has a mu of 60. It's a little lower than 6SL7, but I'm curious if it would get close enough to be better than a 12AX7 for the true B15 tone.
I'll be throwing in a few lower gain tubes to see how things go. But, I'm in the March order...

Well, not quite. P15 > either Slampegg (since it's two different flavors of it and I break down the differences) and in a distant and not close finish, the Fliptop.
I've said it multiple times that the Slampegg is excellent and especially at the price point, great value. They are more similar overall than different. If you want the classic B-15 (6L6 sound), P-15 or Regular. If you want a variant used in many other B-series including other B-15 models, B-25B, etc., and the 12AX7, the X is your cuppa. You really can't go wrong with either if you don't want to shell out the dough for a P-15 or real B-15.

Now you're giving me ideas, Nathan. If I had one I'd try it.
That said, the 12AX7 is right for the board variant you emulated and is used in a lot of B-series Ampeg amps including B-15 variants so it's not wrong - just different.
Funny you should ask. That is exactly what I plan to run. I my order is "no tube, flat black" in April.
I have a Mullard 12AT7 ready in wait. So...there is a way to find out sooner....
Did some remote bass tracking for one of the bands I’m in over the weekend. I decided to use my London Underground for this track instead of my usual P15, and after some fiddling I managed to dial in a tone I really liked. The band leader described it as sounding “perfect”, so I’ll take that.
The tone stack took some getting used to, though. I had the gain and bass much too high to start with. Sounded good on its own but just wasn’t right in the mix. Backed everything down a bit and all of a sudden it came into focus. Even though it’s meant to get grittier than the PA, I think I prefer this pedal on the cleaner side of things

After perusing the SB site, now I want a Space Heater. The site says “Mock Build”. Just to clarify that means all current spots are filled/purchased and there are no new builds planned for that pedal?

It means that there are no build spots open currently. When the next round of build spots open up you can buy one and select whichever pedal you’d like. All pedals are built to order, to a maximum of 40 per month. There is not a pre-determined number of each pedal built each month.

Yep that’s correct. If memory serves I believe he may be opening April slots this week but I could be wrong...

a 5751 has a mu of 70 so i think it would be perfect for a lower mu tube in a Slampegg X. in most cases, when i sub a 12AT7 for a 12AX7 the sound was quite a bit thinner, so i don't think it's just the mu factor that is as important as the tone, but YMMV. and BTW 5751's don't thin it out at all.
+1 5751 is a good lower gain sub for 12AX7. Overall tonality and bandwidth are similar, just lower gain.

The reason it's taking me a bit to get May slots opened up is that there will be some changes in May. The biggest of which will be that I will not be offering mini-tube builds anymore. I know there are mixed feelings about that, but the fact is that X Series builds have outsold mini tube builds since they've been available, and the margin has been increasing. January had 16 mini tube orders, February had 12. March originally had 6 mini-tube builds, but I was short on mini-tubes so I offered everyone in March the option to go to X Series at no additional cost and now there are only 2 mini-tube builds this month (two people with Sunnday Drives wanted the smaller form factor).
There are a couple reasons I'm doing this, which have been discussed a few times throughout this thread, but since it's a couple hundred pages long now I'll summarize:

There are a couple reasons I'm doing this, which have been discussed a few times throughout this thread, but since it's a couple hundred pages long now I'll summarize:
- Power: X Series builds can run 9V or 12V and pull significantly less current than mini tubes
- Serviceability: the mini tubes don't fail often but sometimes go microphonic, and it's convenient to be able to swap the tube yourself rather than have to send me the pedal, especially since there are currently Sushi Box pedals in 11 countries (last I counted).
- Flexibility: tube rolling isn't for everyone, but a lot of people like having the option. Don't like the tone? Swap for a different one. Want a little less gain? Swap for a 12AT7 or 5751. Loads of options.
- Form Factor: I know this is one of the biggest arguments to keep the mini tubes, but I'm starting to work on getting two 12AX7 into the standard smaller enclosure and am hoping to get as many as I can into it. Pedalboard real estate isn't an issue for everyone, but it is a dealbreaker for some, and I want to make having awesome tube pedals on your board as easy as possible. You shouldn't have to change your whole rig for one pedal.
Thanks for keeping us looped in- My LU minitube will become unobtanium! There's always change and compromise. It's really fun being along for the ride with you and seeing how things continue to grow and change! Exciting stuff
I'm glad that I received a mini Slampegg before they were discontinued. If gigging ever starts up again I may order an X.
