The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

My PAX showed up today. Spent a while on my semi-hollow, really was too lazy to open any cases and it was hanging on the wall, haha. Came together very nicely. When I was done I shoved in my bari Tele which I usually play through my guitar amp. It sounded really good too. I might just see what happens if I try the bass voiced PAX on the baritone through the Webers. Fun day.

So the good news is Sushi Box FX was profitable in 2020. The bad news is that means I have to pay taxes :p I was planning to get my last component orders squared away for March tonight, but apparently I get to organize my income/expenses for my accountant.

Fun fact: I spent a total of $1134.75 at USPS in 2020. This was for 119 shipments of pedals.

If you have to pay more taxes it means things went well!

At least, try to keep that in mind when you write the check...

Yup, that's the plan. There's all these expenses that don't seem like a big deal at the time, but adding them up for the whole year is huge. I just finished all the math, I spent just over $15k on pedal-related expenses for the whole year :wideyed:

It is nice to have a number to show my wife though, "I spent this much money, but we still made this much profit!"

Wait, you took a tube from an Edison and put it into your PAX? Edison takes an EF86, PAX is 12AX7, 100% different tubes with different pinouts. I don't think it would damage anything in the PAX (I'm not positive, I'll look into it), but don't do that again :p

92% of noise in my preamps is from power supplies, and I've noticed some 12AX7 don't like running at 9V as much as others. Do you have a 12V supply you could try? Polarity doesn't matter, so if you have a random appliance that runs on 12V that power supply should work.

If the noise persists please make a recording of it and send it to me, pictures are worth a hundred words but video/audio are worth at least a thousand in troubleshooting.
aaaand that's why you shouldn't mess with tubes after 14 hours of hard labor. I was so excited for this month's Westinghouse that my brain jumped the gun. I'll keep you updated

Ahem.

Powering a Slampegg X with a DC-7 at 12v. Scratchy switching, sound cutting in and out. Have I simply not let it warm up long enough?

EDIT - Sound kept cutting in and out, now nothing. The switch was super scratchy before it stopped working. Was planning to pop the back off and see if anything was amiss, but one of the screws is in so tight I can't get it off. Will wait for @Sushi Box FX to advise. Goes without saying, but I'm mega bummed out.

EDIT 2 - Plugged it back in, seems okay now. Still can't get the back off. Will keep an eye on it tonight when I get to play it more extensively.

EDIT 3 - Probably some sort of false alarm. Not sure what the initial deal was. But this thing sounds pretty sweet after a few minutes. That one screw still won't come out, but if the noisy switch issue is gone, then I'll let well enough alone for now.

IIRC outside my Twin, I think Sushi said they are all 9V and that 12V doesn't have any advantage. This isn't a pedal that starts with B lol I'm not sure that 12V won't damage, either ...

Also, neither Slampegg for me needs to warm up.

Maybe try at at 9v. The website makes no mention of running it at 12v so it may like 9v better. But of course Nathan would know for sure.

It says 9-12v right on the pedal. When it was having issues, it didn't matter. I had one output on my CIOKS for 9v and the other at 12v. It's very strange, but things seem fine now.
I don't suppose you live where it's still frigid cold out? My SlamX was NOT happy the first few hours I got it last month, but the pedal was also probably ~20°F from sitting at USPS for so long.
Warmed up, it's been solid. I do have ~4seconds of warm-up time from my DC7 @ 9v on a current doubler cable (just cause I swap the spot between multiple pedals, they don't all NEED the doubler).

Advice needed, please:

I’ve got a PA and I love it. Is there anything the Space Heater can do that the PA can’t, or am I better of with a Westinghouse for a different flavor of tube warmth?

Thanks for the help!

From what Sushi told me, the Space Heater is a PA without the tone stack.

I couldn't decide between the Space Heater and the Westinghouse, so I decided to order both in April. I may or may not get rid of one.

BUT- I'm also excited to see how they do with my newly found cigar box guitar hobby.

Sorry I haven't checked in today, I was so spoiled with my 9 hours of sleep that my kids decided I only need 5 last night, so I've been in zombie mode all day.

I'm glad it started working, but sometimes that's more mysterious than not working, so definitely keep an eye on it and let me know if it acts up again.

Mini tube pedals can only run on 9V (except for Dr Wattson and Sunnday Drive), X can run on either. With the lower voltage the tube heaters also pull less current, which is great, but depending on the supply and on the weather and position of various constellations in relation to Mars, it may not heat up enough and may run noisy. 12V is what 12AX7 spec calls for, and at 12V it should pull a little more current and get noticeably warmer.

As a rule of thumb, if an X Series pedal is having problems at 9V the first thing I will tell you is to try it at 12V. If it still has problems at 12V then more questions will follow.

Tone stacks always have some amount of loss to them, so Space Heater can drive a little harder than PA, but really that's the only difference. If you like your PA and want to add something a little different to your setup I would recommend Westinghouse over Space Heater.
