Greenhouse oh yes!! What about the Bassman projects?

Right, prototype board for that one and the Tweed Deluxe are sitting on my bench right now. Just need tube sockets and some pots and jacks and they're ready for a test, probably get to that sometime this week after everything is finished for November.

So right after I ordered the Greenhouse boards I had an idea of how I wish I had done it better, so unless the existing boards are amazing I'm going to make a change. But the main point of Greenhouse is to be a tube FX loop. So you'll get a tube input stage to tubify your tone, then it will go into whatever pedal you have in the loop, then back into Greenhouse where it goes through another tube stage then to the output. I think it had a clean blend in it too, didn't it? Been a while, don't really remember

Clean off the first tube stage. I think. Just guessing though. My memory is dodgy on a good day, but on a Monday after a 4-day weekend I don't remember much of anything.

I mean I obviously won't promise happening happening, but a just-for-fun prototype is definitely happening.

Hopefully the Tweed and the Bassman head versions are in the works. The Bassman is the amp used by The Beatles and on nearly every other record NOT recorded with a B15.

I was in a Neil Young kick when I suggested the tweed deluxe, so you can guess at the level of gain I’m aspiring to from that one. lol

So... what are they operational differences between the Slampegg and Slampegg X. Does the X have more output ? less ? is the EQ wider, thinner, fatter... do those difference permute over to the other mini tube models when compared the the X model ?

Got a new circuit board order in today, pretty excited about this one. Parts should be in tomorrow, and I think this will probably be the first thing I build during my break. My 6x10 cab has been feeling lonely without a sexy 6SL7/6L6 tube head on top of it, so that needs to be fixed.

The Slampegg on it's own is pretty damn cool! Is X noticably mo'bettah ?

My recollection is that the switch to 12ax7 from the Russian military tube was less about tone, and more about customer comfort. Mini tubes are soldered to the board, “what do I do when the tube dies??” “I wanna tube roll with my collection of NOS tubes.”

Somewhere in this thread, Nathan discusses the change in level/gain and EQ with the move to the X circuit, nothing profound if memory serves.

Nathan is very responsive to user input, and the people called out.

Sorry it took me a bit, been busy working on stuff.

So the circuit is exactly the same between the two, the only differences are:

• 12AX7 has higher amplification factor (100) than 6N21B (70). If you throw a lower gain tube in there it will get pretty close to the mini tube sound.
• X versions run at a higher voltage. 6N21B have a max plate voltage of 200V, so I run the circuits at 200V. 12AX7 can run higher, so the X versions run around 235-245V. Higher voltage in the tube world generally translates to higher output level, and X series generally has a hotter output than the mini.
• The overall tonal character of the pedal will depend on what kind of tube you throw in there. I use JJ/Tesla for everything because they're a reliable, good-sounding, modern production tube that I consider fairly middle-of-the-road tonewise. If you want something warmer you can go for a russian tube like modern Sovtek or Tung-Sol, if you want something brighter then something like Sino or Genalex.

So the actual tonal difference between X series and mini depends on the tube, but with a stock JJ/Tesla tube you'll notice the X series is generally brighter than the russian mini tubes.

Quick November note:

Everything has shipped now besides the Smoke Signals. The parts came in today, but one of the Black Eyes gave me some unexpected trouble so I didn't have as much time as I originally planned tonight. I'm going to work on the Smoke Signals a little right now before I go to bed so it will be relatively quick finishing them up and getting them shipped tomorrow.

I used to play with someone that ran a tweed deluxe that hard needing a fan, then one night someone decided to borrow the fan. What survived wasn't pretty, melted the speaker.

It had been a while since I built one of these. Still at risk of being discontinued due to low ordering numbers and tonal overlap with some others, but it does sound great.

Also I should probably admit I got a little distracted last night, and this stole a few minutes that could have otherwise be spent on Smoke Signal builds. The chassis will need some modification as I'm changing the tube layout, so I won't be finishing the build until everything else is wrapped up, but I wanted to see the board finished.
