The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

IMG_20211207_1753174.jpg
Does anyone have any idea what this residue is before I try to clean it? Don't want to mess up the finish.

@Sushi Box FX ?

Well I'm sorry for those that didn't want me to open Pandora (sushi?) box but will the handwired UA with flat eq sound different than the hw space heater? Anyway I'll build a new micro pedalboard for the handwired space heater because the hw UA sound killer, I can attest, but I'm not sure about the voltage thing, I think it's the tone wood on top of the pedal that makes the difference.;)

Unfortunately whatever it is, it's permanent. I used several cleaners and even an abrasive scouring pad on it. Good thing I don't really worry about my pedals being pristine. But if I decide it's not my flavor (I have a custom meatsmoke amp and a custom meatsmoke pedal) the next person may care.

One idea @Sushi Box FX is to add the ultra high and low to each channel. I also had Ben tame the second channel. He ended up using 1 tube and it's glorious.

Meatsmoke ultra lo is THICC.
I don’t think the ultra lo/hi switches were ever on the standalone preamps. Only in the amp heads.

Hmmmm. I've had 4 Meatsmoke Pre amps and still have one. The last 2 both had the ultra high and ultra low on each channel. I also had Ben separate the channels on my last one so they did not stack.

Although, to be honest, I've purchased so many verellen amps I probably requested the ultra switches as a custom order

Hey guys. Does anyone know off the top of their heads which tube goes where on the sushi comp? If I have the pedal open and I'm looking down into it, which one is the 12au7 and which is the 12at7?

Thanks in advance

I don’t think that was standard, but it may have been a revised later version I never saw. Hadn’t been paying close attention these last few years.

I just want to make sure you get it right the first time!
Imagine the glory! A tube driven, all analog signal path for IEM setup.

Where everyone plays into a digital board, haters will say.

But for recording!

Where everybody plays into a DAW,
haters will say.

But for mojo!

Where ... the haters will have to shut it, because everybody knows that digital mojo sucks big time.

The mud is dialed out because of HPF and you can have face melting fuzz or roaring overdrive without the weird sparkles that hurt the ears because of LPF, your pedalboard mimicking your favorite cabinet because of that slight bump (or cut) at that sweet spot in the frequency spectrum. All there on a strong symmetric signal on the XLR out - and because the whole thing is so good that you even want to use it when you're playing actual cabinets, there is a 1/4" output, too.

There is no need to stop here!
If you wanna hit it out of the park, how about a real tube driven output with output transformer and dummy load (looking at H&K Bass Master or Ampeg PF20/50T), so you can have a DI out that gives you tube power amp compression?

Just to regress back a few posts....

I don't have experience with either the H&K bass Master or the very seemingly similar SWR Interstellar Overdrive (tube pre into 1 x power tube - 5 watt output stage), but I did used to own a Warwick Quad VI full amp head that was a tube based pre - 1 x EL84 power tube - 600 watt Mosfet power section. I can attest to the tube power "heft" that was felt rather than heard, plus it did have that squishy/punchy tube power section compression. I wish I still had that amp actually.

El Murdoque's vision here would be very interesting if it were ever to become available, but I do realise this would be a very specific project that would take time and much thought to create.

Weird. I have a theory, but it's hard to tell based on the pictures. If it's not coming off with any cleaner it's possible that it may be under the clearcoat, which means it may be rust that rubbed off of my drill press when I drilled the holes for the jacks. I'm assuming this is the "foot" face of the pedal? I usually do all powdercoating after drilling, but in an effort to save some time I tried ordering pre-coated enclosures (won't be doing that again) for some colors. If you decide it bothers you I can absolutely re-finish it or build a new box for you if you would be comfortable swapping the guts. Sorry about that, my new prescription glasses should be here this week so I hopefully won't let things like that happen again.

Your assumption is correct, a handwired UA with the EQ set flat should sound the same as a handwired Space Heater. They would be redundant.

If anyone has tips on how he does his ultra hi/ultra lo I would be happy to take a look. The unit I traced did not have it, but I would of course love to see one that does.

If you have the pedal open and are looking down into it, 12AU7 is on the right and 12AT7 is on the left.

I agree it would be super neat, and just based on this thread there seems to be enough demand to justify spending time on it, but as you said if I'm going to do it then it absolutely needs to be done right or it's not worth doing, and to really do it right will take a good amount of time.

I own a H&K Bass Master and owned both Ampeg amps (20W and 50W) before that. On the Ampegs, the signal from the output transformer was too noisy for my taste and it was kind of bothering FOH, too.
Given that these Ampegs are made in China and the features they offer are quite rich for the price asked, I'm quite sure that the components are not of the highest quality and that there is much room for improvement.
The H&K is silent in comparison, but this was made in the 80s in Germany, so I suspect a much higher build quality.

The problem I see with something like that implemented in pedal form would be the staggering demands in terms of power you'd need to feed it. I have no clue about the tubes available that give you the sound of a tube driven power amp, but 5W output from a single tube like the H&K and the SWR use sounds like bare minimum.
To get at least two tubes and an output transformer running would require, this is guesswork here, quite a bit more than your mean PSU (even the good ones) will willingly part with - especially if you step up 9V input to more than 200V in a tiny enclosure.

The first bit of my post, where I asked for a tube driven gain stage with EQ/Filtering and high quality DI, though - that seems a lot more practical and doable. In my layman's mind, it's just taking a Finally and adding a 1 band EQ plus HPF and LPF.

Thank u. That must be it

Thanks for the layout for the deep dish

I am still planning a more feature-rich DI that will be like a step-up model from Finally. It's on the books, but it's obviously another one of those things I don't want to rush so I make sure I get it right.

For the tube power amp simulator a la SWR Interstellar Overdrive, it will be big, it will be heavy, and it will absolutely take AC power. The switch-mode power supply I use in pedals for the high voltage supply is plenty for low-current tubes like 12AX7, but wouldn't be able to supply enough for even a single 6V6. As I've mentioned before the way the SWR works is by having a full amplifier (preamp, power amp, transformers and all) and sticking a dummy load on the output transformer to drop from speaker level to line level. So it made sense for me to design a small bass amplifier (I went with single 6V6 output section) that I could use as a proof of concept for the power amp sim. The board alone (which will be here next week) is just under 6" x 3", which includes tube sockets but not transformers. I'm going to eventually build it into a practice amp so my poor family doesn't have to hear (feel) the full girth of my 6x10 when I'm practicing at home, but before that it will be used as a proof of concept for the power amp sim.

*Nothing is actually open for ordering yet, nor are in-stock pedals for sale yet; Just sharing some screenshots to tease everyone :D

Just a fun sneak peek at what's holding up January ordering: The ability to choose on the product page between a custom preorder, or if Sushi already has something in stock :) Once this code is finished and Sushi works on opening January orders (hopefully this evening if I hurry my butt up on code changes), I'll get a filter or banner or something setup so you can choose to see everything that's in-stock-now somehow:

Get to the page, see stuff:

Hit the dropdown, choose what you want to buy/do:

If you pick a pre-built, you're done! Add to cart and buy:

If you chose a preorder month, customize your pedal like normal:

I should probably make a pedal called WebAdmin Test Product. WATP for short. WATP X. Handwired WebAdmin Test Product, HWWATP.
