The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Random/not random question:

If a preamp has HPF and LPF, do you need a tone stack? LPF/HPF on the front end or the back end? Where should everything go?

If you could do something like a Broughton Messenger with an Underground Accellerator built in you'd have to buy a bigger house so you'd have a place to put all the money that you made.
 
I tried the Finally at 12v and I like it! Now maybe I should start looking for a NOS 5751.

Is there such a thing as an in-line 9v-12v voltage 133-percenter like the One Spot and Xotic 9v-18v doublers?

Setting everything up I realized that SB can be powered either tip-negative or -positive, and I can save myself a special cable or adapter, but I am a little unnerved by going tip-positive when it's inconsistent with everything else.

There shouldn't be any difference between 9v and 12v, and I don't think I heard any on mine (but I already switched my tube to a 12au7 so it became more of a clean DI that way).

@Sushi Box FX anything special or different about the Finally that'd make 12v act different different 9v?

From the FAQ page on the site:
Q: Can I increase headroom if I feed it more than 9v?
A: No. All SushiBox pedals have internal voltage regulators, which means whatever voltage you send it (9-12v) it is always running at the same internal tube voltage of ~235v.

^Truth. The tube sees the same high voltage regardless of what you're feeding it, increasing the voltage just increases the heater voltage, so you'll notice it running a little warmer. Shouldn't be any change to tone.

I'm a little bit late to the party here, but you would still need a tone stack. I put the HPF/LPF directly before my preamp. I figure that I want my effects to have the full spectrum to work with, and I'll filter out anything unwanted close to the end. Filters can add low and dirt can add unwanted high, so putting the HPF/LPF after everything else but before the tone stack will give a nice clean signal to the preamp.

Just my thoughts.

Now we gotta work on Mr Sushi to do a 12a based channel strip in a pedal...

So I've been playing around with my Smoke Signal and I've realized I really dig the sound around the 8-9 o'clock position on the drive channel. If I were to put in a tube with a lower gain factor, say a 12at7 or 12au7 - would I end up making my "usable range" wider on the gain knob? Effectively making spreading that 8-9 o'clock range wider allowing more fine tuning? Also, would switching brands from JJ to, say, Mullard create a more low-mid focused sound? thirdest question - if I have the pedal open, which tube is clean which one is drive?

In theory yup, that would absolutely do it.

Again I would expect it to, Mullards are "warmer" than JJ in my experience, but as with anything subjective, YMMV.

So the gain channel stacks the two tubes so either tube will affect it. But if you have the pedal open in front of you the tube on the right is only used by the drive channel, the one on the left is used by both channels and can therefore be oversimplified as the clean tube.
 
My experience with rolling tubes in my Meatsmoke head was to put the best sounding 12AX7 in the first tube stage, and then putting a lower gain tube in V2 so that the lower gain tube only affects the OD channel. Putting a lower gain tube in V1 only took away from the clean channel tone. I went with a 5751 in V2, but honestly lately would consider going even lower gain on that side.
