The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Fun anecdote: I work in the defense/aerospace industry which is overflowing with acronyms. It's common sometimes to make "back-ronyms" where you make up the acronym first then decide what it stands for to make it fit. At my last job a couple friends and I had a proposal for a project that we were trying to get funding for so we decided to come up with a cool name and acronym for it to make it catchy, and one of my most proud successes of my career was the back-ronym I came up with:

Binaural Audio Tactical System for Integrated Guided Naval Aviation Logistics

That's right, BATSIGNAL.

Needless to say our project beat out a dozen or so others to get funding.

Great work, Sushi. Unfortunately, now you've got me gassing for a handwired one.
I put a Lightning Boy 2020s Transformer before it, and that's a great combo.

I won't play without an HPF anymore. an LPF is nice, but less of a necessity in my opinion.
Personally I put the hpf/lpf very early in my chain, but they can also be used later for more of a speaker sim type use. However, they work better as speaker sims if they have a resonant freq boost, like the Broughton resonant freq EQ.

an hpf with a slope over over 12 db an octave is ideal.

regarding the tone stack, yes, you still need it.
i use the HPF/LPF like a janitor for my signal. It cleans up the sub sonic stuff, and the ultra high stuff (string noise etc) so that my preamp is only working with the real meat and potatoes of my signal.

If a preamp has HPF and LPF, do you need a tone stack? LPF/HPF on the front end or the back end? Where should everything go?
Well aint that a loaded question.

HPF and LPF in addition to a more typical tone stack makes for a very flexible preamp. In the case of an all-in-one box, I'd say the tone stack should be before the pass filters. Goosing up a shelving bass boost and then knocking back the subsonic lows with the HFP is a great trick. Same for being able to boost treble and then using the LPF to tame pick attack and/or fret clack on the high end.

With standalone HPF and LPF boxes (I know that's not what we're talking about here), your placement options have other impacts as well. HPF at the front end of a pedal chain can help clean up the response from other pedals downstream, particularly overdrives and compressors which may be overly reactive to thick low frequency content. LPF would typcially go towards the end of the chain, and certainly after drive pedals to do a very basic cabsim thing.

Everyone is gonna have their own take. Mine is HP and LP filter at the back end. Tone stack would be cool, something like the Tone Hammer DI....shelving bass and treble, sweepable mid bell EQ.
Combine that with input gain (to drive tubes) and master volume, 1\4 inch out and DI out etc.... There's a whole new Sushi bass preamp!

You could call it a BATSIGNAL! Or even a sneaky nod - call it a Sushi Box Gotham!

So, if the slots open, will there be a HW SH option? Or will it be a special offering unrelated to the available slots, like the HWUA?
It will be a special offering unrelated to the available slots and will be built and fulfilled in December. Unlike the HWUA I'm going to wait until they're finished to list them so I can ship right away. Feels more like a legit business that way :P
 
I am still planning a more feature-rich DI that will be like a step-up model from Finally. It's on the books, but it's obviously another one of those things I don't want to rush so I make sure I get it right.

For the tube power amp simulator a la SWR Interstellar Overdrive, it will be big, it will be heavy, and it will absolutely take AC power. The switch-mode power supply I use in pedals for the high voltage supply is plenty for low-current tubes like 12AX7, but wouldn't be able to supply enough for even a single 6V6. As I've mentioned before the way the SWR works is by having a full amplifier (preamp, power amp, transformers and all) and sticking a dummy load on the output transformer to drop from speaker level to line level. So it made sense for me to design a small bass amplifier (I went with single 6V6 output section) that I could use as a proof of concept for the power amp sim. The board alone (which will be here next week) is just under 6" x 3", which includes tube sockets but not transformers. I'm going to eventually build it into a practice amp so my poor family doesn't have to hear (feel) the full girth of my 6x10 when I'm practicing at home, but before that it will be used as a proof of concept for the power amp sim.
I have been waiting patiently on this one but now I'm anxious this will be a game changer for me. The deep dish took my sound up a huge amount and I can imagine adding this the Gondawana and a sbvt pre, smoke signal or maybe a Future mesa inspired two channel tube pre in my setup would be end game. This is a awesome time to be a bassist.

So I haven't gotten the January batch open yet, but @Sonicblaze successfully taught me how to add in-stock pedals to the website, so you can now go in and order anything I have right now, which includes:
  • 1x SBVT
  • 2x JC Emerald
  • 2x Space Heater
  • 6x Sashimi Fuzz
I'm going to try to get January ordering open as well for those that want something different, so that should be happening.
