The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Super quick updates about some stuff before I head back to the workbench and continue ignoring my computer:

April batch: Still chugging along. Without killing myself I'm managing finishing assembly on 10 pedals per day. At that rate I hope to be able to get everything finished up Monday night and start testing Tuesday, so you should start seeing shipping notices around the middle of the week. I know I'm still within the 10-day period I give myself each month, but I still try every month to finish before the end of the month, so I still want to apologize for the delay.

Previous Batch Upgrades: The April batch includes some orders from previous months that opted to have their order held until handwired builds were available. Most of these have not been invoiced for the balance of the handwired version, and I plan to go through the list and start sending invoices tomorrow. So if I was holding a previous month's order for you in order to upgrade to handwire, expect to see an email from me sometime Monday.

May batch: Now that the CNC controller has been gutted and upgraded I don't expect any issues that would cause a delay in the May batch. My family is planning a short (~4 day) road trip at the end of the month, and I will be trying to finish everything before then. I will of course keep everyone posted as the May batch progresses.

Tubes and June Batch: When I placed my most recent tube order, half of the order (50 tubes) was backordered and was expected to ship in late April. It has not shipped and I have not heard anything from the supplier. I sent an email yesterday, I'm hoping they get back to me tomorrow so I can find out what to expect. I have a good number of tubes on hand and I know there won't be an issue with the April batch, I'll have to do a count to confirm but I don't expect an issue with the May batch either. I am confident that I do not have enough tubes on hand right now for a June batch. As such I will not be opening ordering until I know what's going on with tubes. If tubes will not be available in time I may accept orders as normal for non-tube pedals (Fluffy Kitten, Echosaurus) and orders for pedals with no tubes included, or I may take the month off. I expect to make that decision within the next week.
We can change my May Black Eye order to no-tube, if that helps.

Thanks for the kind words, I really do appreciate it. I'm not much of a businessman, but I definitely try to err on the side of too much communication rather than risk not having enough. I've had people in industry tell me that I'm "too available" and it's not sustainable on a larger scale operation, so I guess I'm just going to stay as a small-scale operation. Building pedals doesn't pay my bills or put food on the table, so I can run the business however I want.

And on that note I'm going to bed. All HWSH and HWLR for the month have been assembled and are ready for testing, I'll keep everyone posted on progress tomorrow.
Test mine really loudly. Make your neighbors teeth hurt. That's how I intend to use my HWLR. Dime Everything.

That's one of the benefits of having my workshop in a windowless room in a basement facing away from my closest neighbor, I can test things as loud as I want. My family is far more likely to tell me to turn down than anyone else.

My 5 year-old freaking kills me sometimes. "Daddy, you should stop. You're not very good at the guitar." Thanks kiddo.

What about all that R&D and troubleshooting you’ve been talking about…….
That will continue regardless of what else I'm doing. More and Greenhouse are sitting on a shelf awaiting boxing, Smoke Signal II will be top priority after the April batch is finished, Gondwana is moving along slowly, and the unnamed "fancy" D.I. is working its way through my brain into a solidified design.

"Taking the month off" doesn't actually mean not working on pedals, I'm incapable of doing that :P

So what I'm hearing is that I can plan to buy groceries for May and June, instead of budgeting for MORE, BASSDUDE, and BLAZER.
That's probably for the best.
"You could afford better tone if you just skipped Starbucks for a couple weeks."

On second thought, if I have the opportunity get my hands on a new, tested and verified 12AX7 tube, given the current market I should probably not shoot myself in that particular foot.
@Sushi Box FX Please disregard my comment and don't make any changes to my order. :)

Yeah I don't plan on increasing prices because of tubes, so if you don't already have a good number of high-quality tubes lying around, may as well get one or two of my JJ 12AX7 at a reasonable price while you have the chance.

Just had a thought (careful!):
I have a handful of 12DW7's (1/2 12AX7, 1/2 AU7). How would that work in a HWUA?

IIRC, pins 6,7,8 are 12AX7, and 1,2,3 are the AU7. Which is which in the UA?

I suppose if the first stage in the UA uses the AX side, not much would change, gain-wise...

Rainy Monday daydream...

Just realized JJ makes an ECC823 - AU on the first stage, AX on the second. Hmmm..

HWUA goes into the second tube stage (pins 6, 7, and 8) first, so with 12DW7 it would be like having a 12AX7 for the first stage and a 12AU7 for the second stage. ECC823 would be the opposite.

What effect, if any, would that have?

I didn't know they made tubes like that. How much deeper can the tube-rolling rabbit hole get?
Using 12DW7 would mean you have a really hot signal going into a low gain tube. So of the two options this would be the option giving the most drive, as the output stage gets hit harder. ECC823 would give a cleaner sound with a louder output but less breakup.

This is my assumption based on theory, I have not personally tried either of these tubes.

Happy to be the guinea pig:woot:
